Segment 1 (running time 12:05)

Listen to this segment
Broadcasting from the Arizona Crawfish Festival in Overgaard, Arizona!

Jay's Tip of the week from Harper's Nursery and Landscaping:  It's transition time!

  • This is the time of year to start making room for fall vegetables.
  • The guys talk composting and prepping the garden for the next phase of your garden.
  • Spread the work out over the next few weekends so you're not taking on a big chore all at once in this heat.

Caller:

  • Has 5 Chinese Elm trees that have all started to die over last two years and he's not sure what to do at this point.

Recommendation - It sounds exactly like root rot and that's why it dies so quickly. Check the soil conditions and think about planting a tree that's a little less susceptible to problems.

Segment 2 (running time 6:43)

Listen to this segment
Callers:

  • Tom - He has a golden barrel cactus with arms coming off the side. Can he take the arms off and plant them in the ground for more plants.

Recommendation - It's possible but he'll damage the Mother plant, so try to avoid messing with it at all.

  • Diane - She has a full grown mesquite tree that is making a lot of popping sound and she wants to know what it is?

Recommendation - It's probably just expansion and contraction just like your home creaks and cracks.

Segment 3 (running time 11:24)

Listen to this segment
  • The crew discusses some of the planting and maintaining differences between the higher elevations versus the valley.

Did you know that the veggies at the Arizona Crawfish Festival are all locally grown and the sweet corn came from our friends at Mortimer's Family Farms!

Segment 4 (running time 7:23)

Listen to this segment
A few callers want to know what elevation it's possible to grow Aspen Trees.

Callers:

  • David planted an Aspen tree and he's worried about the root system invading his pool.

Recommendation - If his pool doesn't leak, he should be fine. Just make sure to water properly (slow and deep) to make sure the roots don't need to spread out to find water.

  • Jane - She has a lemon tree and wants to know if she has it planted in the correct orientation.

Recommendation - Her home is in a higher elevation that gets fairly cold, so it needs to be protected. Consider a dwarf lemon tree so she can move it to avoid freezing.

    Segment 1 (running time 12:18)

    Listen to this segment
Rosie shares a family camping trip story as we broadcast from the Arizona Crawfish Festival.

We talk about "The Repurposed House" and Rosie and Jennifer share their inspiration for today's show!

Stop throwing everything away....Learn to Recycle, Re-purpose and Reuse!

Learn what "De-Constructing" is. Vintage older homes offer unique hardware, quality woods, cabinets, etc.

    Segment 2 (running time 6:31)

    Listen to this segment
We share stories about saving vintage family furniture and hardware that you can re-purpose and it will have special meaning too!  Check out Jennifer's work on our Facebook page.

    Callers:

    • Cody - She has a mobile home next to her home that her in-laws used to live in. Now it's empty and has a terrible odor she can't get rid of.

Recommendation - She probably has a P-Trap that runs dry, it will allow the methane gas to back up into the home. Once in a while add some water to the P-Trap and that should keep the smell in the sewers.

    Segment 3 (running time 12:08)

    Listen to this segment
    Callers:

    • Gina - She's seen advertising for an electronic water conditioner and wants to know if they work?

Recommendation - Rosie is VERY SKEPTICAL OF THIS PRODUCT. The only way you get soft water is with sodium or potassium. "Water Treatment Equipment" means nothing, really.  Simply stirring a bucket of water is technically treating it. Be very careful and check that it's certified by the Water Quality Association.  Call Culligan Water of Tucson 520-792-9700520-792-9700.

*If the water treatment company you are dealing with is using salt to scare you, find someone else.

    Reuse, Recycle and Re-Purpose

Back to Re-purposing - Find ideas on Pinterest and Jen found a great business in town called Porter Barn Woods. They have very unique wood, creative ideas and its an amazing yard you can search through. He even had some wood from JOHNNY CASH! How cool!

Here's a Resource Guide for all the great places to find ideas and materials. In Phoenix, don't forget the Habitat for Humanity ReStore or visit Stardust Building Supplies.

    Segment 4 (running time 6:43)

    Listen to this segment
We share a story about the ReStore and how unique finds are there waiting for you! With the recession winding down, they are deconstructing a home a week and that means great finds for you.

Get Inspired and start to Recycle, Reuse and Re-purpose. Think about everything your throwing out and if it could be used somewhere else and keep it out of the landfill!

Join us next Saturday and every Saturday from 8 to 11!!!
