Tip Of The Week: It's Rosie pruning time. We discuss trimming, planting and other plant types that can be worked on this time of year.

• Remember you can attend seminars on caring for roses at Harper's Nursery.
• Planting and selecting the correct type of rose for your home.
• Jay loves the white iceberg rose for Arizona.
• Climbing roses, smaller roses and different varities for different applications.
• Tombstone has "The World's Largest Rose bush"
• Higher elevations might require a tougher variety and protection from the cold.

• We talk fruit trees, NOT citrus trees.
• Caring and planting "stone fruit" trees.
• Using tree leaves as compost and what Jay suggests for your yard.

• Paul - His lemons are really big and very dry. What would cause this?

Recommendation - Jay thinks it's a ponderosa lemon variety and they grow much larger and drier on the inside. 

• Richard - With the rainy season, he expects a great wild flower season. His family is coming to town and he wants them to come when they are in full bloom. When should he have them come for a visit?

Recommendation - Jay thinks late March is his best bet, but Rosie reminds us that it can be cut shorth with extreme heat. We discuss great routes to take.....

• Ted - He called in to give his opinion on some pine trees in Arizona.....
• Al - He has a ponderosa pine with the top 3rd dead. Should he cut off the top or what do we recommend?

Recommendation - You should always cut out the dead wood and it won't look good. He'll have to decide if it looks good after that or plant a new tree.

• Larry - He has cherry seedlings that he's transplanted into another area, but now after 3 years they've just died. What do we think?

Recommendation - Jay talks through some of the problems with this, including elevations, heat, cold, seed type, etc. He most likely got lucky at that elevations for 3 years.

• Mike - How often do roses need to be watered?

Recommendation - If they are established, they don't need it at all with the winter rain. In other times of year, it's twice a week with heat.

• Fred - He transplanted roses and now they're overgrown. Is it a good time to transplant?

Recommendation - Yes! This is the exact time of year to do it. Just remember that a new bush is fairly inexpensive.

Caller:

• Michael - He has an 18 year old tile roof and is starting to notice a few small leaks. What do we recommend for paper underlayment and should he replace it?

Recommendation - Roofer's recommend different types and Rosie walks Michael through his options. He will need to replace the underlayment.

Callers:

• Michael - If you have blown in insulation in the roof, what is the recommended depth? He also wants to know how to deal with upducts for his swamp cooler? Also, he has a slump block home. Is it a good idea to foam the walls?

Recommendation - Below the rim (under 5K feet) R-30 is good, R-38 is better. Beware of any insulation experts telling him to install radiant barriers. Proper placement is key to succesfull insulation. As far as the upDucts, place a foam panel in front of the uducts to increase efficiency.  We do recommend foam insulation. Call Thermal Advantage!

• Chuck - He can't cool his house after replacing the AC unit 6 years ago...

Recommendation - He needs to get an energy audit. This will help him find out what's wrong with his cooling system. Call REEis Home Performance & Air Conditioning  or Green ID.

Callers:

• Laura - She has a gas clothes dryer and the lint was backed up. She filled up a whole shop vac with it...Now they can't find the dryer vent out of the house.

Recommendation - It's most likely venting into the attic. She can get them professionally cleaned by Dryer Vent Wizard. They would fix any code violations too.

• Tina - She replaced windows in her home in the early 90's. The putty on the bottom of the windows is disinegrating.

Recommendation - They are vinyl on the outside, but this is a common problem with vinyl in Arizona. She could find a great replacement with Pella Windows & Doors.

6 "Red Flags" at your home.

• What home inspector's go through to get certified and what their purpose is in the field.
• The importance of continued education.
• Rosie asks "In Arizona, what is the number one defect found in homeowner inspection's?"

Caller:

• Allen - He's got a flat roof and wants to know the best way to prepare the roof before re-sealing it?

Recommendation - We recommend using a pressure washer and let it dry for 24 hours. Apply a primer and let it dry for a few days, then use the paint. This should solve the problem. Listen for more details.

Callers:

• Gary - His house is retrofitted with light cans in his ceiling. He wants to know if they are thermally protected so he doesn't start a fire?

Recommendation - Rosie thinks they are called "direct burial" and should be fine, but if you don't know error on the side of safety. Secure chicken wire around the top with a small opening to let the heat through. Listen to make sure you're clear.

• Bob - The fan on his AC is kicking on and off by itself 24 hours a day...What can be causing it?

Recommendation - It sounds like a shorted out wire, but we'll bring in an expert in the next segment to clear it up....

Recommendation - Brad from Integrity Air Conditioning & Heating investigates and it sounds like a short in the wiring that needs to be fixed.

Recommendation - Rosie describes using saran wrap to see how much is actually in different areas of the home. If it's only in one spot of the home, he can seal the wall on the outside to block moisture from entering the home.
