Jay from Harper's Nursery & Landscaping Company joins us to take your outdoor living questions!
- Winter gardens should be ready to harvest.
- Fertilize your lawns to avoid yellowing after a freeze.
- It's time to plant cold weather tolerant trees and bushes.
- Tips on picking a "Fresh" Christmas tree.
- Caring for your tree when you get it home.
Callers:
- Chris- He let his lawn die out and want to add dichondra for his pets. Is that something that would work?
Recommendation - It is still around and used some. He can seed it or buy flats of it and put it together in plugs. We aren't sure it's good for use with dogs and high traffic areas. Jay is concerned it might not be the perfect application. He could consider artificial turf.
- Daryl - He had a long concrete sidewalk put in and he didn't put a joint in between the existing slab and his new concrete. Will that be an issue?
Recommendation - Rosie would NOT be concerned with the layout he described.
Letter From a Listener:
- They have two beautiful tomato plants with green fruit. Will they ripen in this weather?
Recommendation - Jay would just bring them in the house and place them somewhere in the sun and they'll ripen up quicker than if they were left out in the cooler nights.
Segment 2 (running time 6:26)
Listen to this segment
Romey thanks Bolt Internet for setting up our internet connection for today's broadcast!
Text From a Listener:
- He's installing a trellis and wants to know if he should bolt it to the home or leave it free standing?
Recommedation - Off the wall is best. Even if it's bolted to the wall, it has 3 to 4 inches of clearance for vines to grow. Jay walks through the layout & the different options they have at Harper's Nursery.
*We talk about a few options for his situation too.
- Poinsetta care for the holiday's. Tips and tricks. Remember, they are tropical plants and need sunlight.

Segment 4 (running time 7:52)
Listen to this segment
- What to do if your lawn is already overrun with bermuda grass.
Callers:
- Jeremy - He wants to put in a lawn for spring. He feels overwhelmed and wants advice on getting started.
Recommendation - Jay talks through a couple of resources and gives his tips. Irrigation would be the 1st step. Watering by hand is too much work. Listen for tips on soil, seed or turf preferences and what to plant.
*Dealing with your lawn and what to do with kids/dogs/grandkids.
- Chad - His mesquite tree has mistletoe taking over one of his main branches. He's afraid to cut it out and that it will kill the tree. What should he do?
Recommendation - The only way to get rid of mistletoe is by pruning it out. It's a parasite and needs to be removed. Unfortunately, there is no easy solution.
