Segment 1 (running time 11:42)

Listen to this segment

Romey & Jennifer broadcast live from The Jersey Lilly Saloon in downtown Prescott for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and John Jay from Harper's Nursery & Landscaping is in-studio to take your questions!

Tip of the Week: In much of Arizona, temps are more like spring weather and it's a great time to plant. (Nothing Tropical or Too Sensitive)

*The crew discusses the benefits and drawbacks to certain bugs in your yard. Pollination is important and many critters take out other annoying pests.

We are discussing gifts perfect for Arizona today. Jay is a big fan of The Talon Shovel Jennifer recommended and we discuss why.  Pick one up at Harper's!

Caller:

  • John - He saw an article recently and wants to know if he's seeing the sesame caterpillar the article mentioned in his yard?

Recommendation - It sounds like it could be another variety of caterpillar, but they are both eliminated with an organic and safe pesticides containing spinosad.

Segment 2 (running time 7:06)

Listen to this segment

Jay shares a few unique gift ideas from Arizona or simply perfect for Arizona!

**Jay shares tips on caring for poinsettia's as well.

Julie Murphee from the Arizona Farm Bureau joins us to share her ideas for unique local gift ideas.  Find all of them online, here.

*Julie mentioned The Cerreta Candy Company, a local Arizona business for over 40 years and Rosie On The House partner....Yum!!!

Segment 3 (running time 11:58)

Listen to this segment

Jennifer admits she picked up some caramel from Simple Farms in Scottsdale last week and that it was so good, she abandoned her plan to share.  You would too!

Plus, the Green Valley Pecans she picked up for the Rosie staff were practically gone before lunchtime....can you blame us?!?

*Since we're talking pecans, Jay and Romey talk through proper care of pecan trees for a successful harvest.  Click here for Cajun Seasoned Roasted Pecans. It's a Romero holiday specialty.

Winter Landscaping Care:

  • The lawn should be established and it's time to cut back on the water intake.
  • Fertilize once a month. (Make sure it includes ammonium nitrate. It's important to the cold weather)
  • This is NOT the time to prune...with one exception, deciduous tree.
  • "dead-head" your roses. (they should be looking great this time of year)

*We dive a little deeper into lawn care. It's not too late to spot treat bald spots in the lawn or damaged areas from dogs.  As far as fertilizer for the lawn, Jay loves a product called, "Turf Royale."

Segment 4 (running time 7:20)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Cathy - Her pecan tree has not been producing good pecans for the last few years and wants to know if it's done producing fruit or does it need fertilizer?

Recommendation - Pecan trees don't usually start harvesting for 7 or 8 years and have a fairly long "producing life," so it should still be good to go.  The older the tree gets, the more fertilizer it needs. Also, add Zinc!

  • Diane - She has a jasmine tree and it looks like it's struggling and wants some tips on trimming.

Recommendation - The jasmine should be trimmed late spring and the honeysuckle she mentioned should be pruned AFTER the frost threat is gone.

  • Judy - She replaced a mesquite tree with a pistache tree and wants some advice on how to water properly.

Recommendation - She can get by with watering every 7-10 days now. When it loses it leaves, it'll require even less.

Thanks to Jay from Harper's Nursery & Landscaping Company. Join us for the Landscaping Hour at 8 next Saturday Morning!
