Segment 1 (running time 11:42)

Listen to this segment

John Eisenhower with Integrity Tree Service is here and brought a guest, Dan Stevens from Living Tree Service.

Tree of the Month: (Curveball for Halloweeen, It's a Wicked Tree!) The Sissoo Tree, don't plant these unless you have a ton of space. John describes all the scary issues they create.

  • Pruning tips for November...go light.
  • You can prune deciduous trees heavier right now.
  • Good options in place of the Sissoo Tree.

Segment 2 (running time 7:05)

Listen to this segment

Dan shares his history and why he got into tree care and started Living Tree Service.

Callers:

  • Max - He planted a sissoo tree 3 years ago about 10 feet away from the foundation, will it be okay?

Recommendation - Foundations are 2 feet deep and there is very little reason to go into that. They'll usually just hit the wall and go sideways. We'd be more concerned with sidewalks and other hardscapes. He could use a root barrier to prevent any chance of damage.

  • Darren - His orange tree produces fruit that doesn't taste very good?

Recommendation - We'll tackle it in the next break......

Segment 3 (running time 12:32)

Listen to this segment

Recommendation's from the last break.....If it's a young tree, it can take some time to get established and produce juicy fruit. Damaged tree can use nutrients to keep the tree alive and the fruit will suffer. Improve the cultural conditions with proper watering and nutrients.

*John talks about composting and what goes into starting your own pile.

Caller:

  • Margaret - Her saguaro cactus died and she has another one on some other property. Can she move the saguaro to a new location.

Recommendation - Saquaro's are protected and usually require a permit. Call the city and make sure that it is legal to do that. If it's illegal, it could be a big fine to move it.

*common issues with Saguaro Cactus and what to look for and treatments.

  • Marilyn - Her Lime tree is growing but it's dropping a lot of leaves this year?

Recommendation - When all the tree leaves are dropping, it's usually something below the ground that's causing it. Check for irrigation & fertilizer issues and make sure she's not putting compost too deep into the soil around the tree or near the trunk. Just make sure you're not over-watering.

  • Paul - 3 pine trees he planted a few months ago died and he wants to plant again. What did he do wrong?

Recommendation - Since he planted in June, he needed to water significantly more. He should have been watering every 3 days while the tree gets established.

Segment 4 (running time 6:49)

Listen to this segment
  • We continue with more for Paul on establishing a healthy tree this time of year.
  • More on creating a compost pile at your home. Ingredients and methods for success!
