Segment 1 (running time 12:17)

Listen to this segment

Jeff from Harper's Nursery & Landscaping Company joins the broadcast to talk about your yard, landscape and garden.

Tip of the Week: It's time to fertizlize in February! It's also a great time to apply pre-emergent herbicide to keep those weeds out of your yard.

*Beware of some planting veggies that still might freeze.

Julie with the Arizona Farm Bureau is in-studio today too and she talks about some awards they've given out recently.

  • We talk about the massive amount of veggies, especially lettuce is coming from Yuma County.
  • Rosie thinks Hunter Steakhouse in Yuma is the best in the county.
  • Arizona's rich history in agriculture.
  • The state of Arizona's water suppy. It's good to go!

Caller:

  • Peggy - She has her roses pruned. Should she fertilize them now?

Recommendation - Yes, February is time to fertilize roses.

  • Romey & Jeff talk about garden preparation and other plants that should be fertilized this time of year.

Segment 2 (running time 6:32)

  • Julie talks about pecan growers in the state and the health of this year's crop.
  • We set up a prize giveaway for the rest of the show.

Segment 3 (running time 13:21)

Listen to this segment

Text From a Listener:

  • Is there a way to kill off the palo verde bark beetles?

Recommendation - The best trick is keeping your trees healthy. Make sure the soil is healthy, add fertilizer and make sure you're watering correctly. He could add grub control into the holes to try and eliminate the beetles that are there.

  • When is the best time to trap prairie dogs?

Recommendation - There is no season that is better than another. We discuss it and Romey likes MoleMax from Bonide.

Caller:

  • Mark - How many pounds of pecans does a fully mature tree produce?

Recommendation - That is just tough to answer. If they are healthy and huge, it's a lot. If it's unhealthy or small....expect less.

*We discuss the Green Valley area and all the pecan trees in Arizona.

Text From a Listener:

  • Will Pecans grow in Goodyear?

Recommendation - Yes! Jeff talks through his opinion and preferences.

  • Is it possible to buy a pecan tree in Arizona?

Recommendation - It has become very difficult and Jeff thinks laws are preventing the trees from being brought into the state. Romey says to check out Elgin Nursery & Tree Farm.

Email From a Listener:

  • Mike - He's selling his home.....his backyard is dirt. Is it too late to plant a rye grass lawn and will it help him sell his home?

Recommendation - It could help, but if he doesn't sell by May, the lawn will die out anyway.

  • Ary - They want to save some trees that they are taking out of his yard. Can he donate them to someone?

Recommendation - Jeff would suggest a tree spade company and he'll give her a few suggestions.

Segment 4 (running time 6:29)

Listen to this segment

Text From a Listener:

  • How do I make sure I'm buying pecans from the Green Valley area?

Recommendation - Scottsdale has specialty shops that will have them and you can always ask your grocery store where they came from.

*Julie talks about the increased labeling Arizona farmers are doing. We also talk about the dairy industry in the state. Remember that you can find great recipes at Fill Your Plate's site.

Segment 1 (running time 12:20)

Listen to this segment
  • Rosie talks about all the ways we can reach you in Arizona through Radio, newspaper's & this site.
  • Events happening in Superior, Arizona.
  • We participated in the "Perfect Gameday Snack" contest put on by Hickman's Family Farms. We agreed with the winner, SuperFarm SuperTruck! Yum!

Caller:

  • Robert - Should he coat his 3-tab shingles to extend the life of his roof?

Recommendation - Tucson is big on coatings, but depending on the age of the roof, the answer changes. If it's a new roof, leave it. He might void the warranty. Rosie talks through a situation that might be an okay time to do it. He can call Lyons Roofing or West Coast Roofing for their professional opinion.

Segment 2 (running time 6:29)

Listen to this segment

Rosie talks about Rosie On The House Remodeling and what they are seeing in the industry.

  • Kitchen & Bath remodeling expectations.
  • Cost expectations relative to cabinet pricing.
  • Cabinet prices are usually 20-25% of the overall cost of the remodel.

Caller:

  • Betty - Her 1928 home roof is draining off the side and is damaging the stucco on her home. What should she do?

Recommendation - The opening is a scupper hole...we'll continue in the next segment.

Segment 3 (running time 13:59)

Listen to this segment

We continue to answer Betty's question about her roof....

Recommendation - Rosie talks through how this roofing setup works. She can install a galvanized steel scupper liner to protect her wall from any further damage. She needs to get the water off the roof, so it doesn't sit on top of the stucco, damaging the wall.

Callers:

  • Rick - He needs to re-paint and re-tile his home, but needs to cut costs. Which one would we recommend hiring a contractor for and which one should he do himself?

Recommendation - He doesn't have experience in either, so Rosie asks a few questions. It's easier to talk through painting rather than tile, but either one needs a lot of prep work so it can be tough on both. Rosie is going to stop by to give him recommendation and we'll put up the first $250.00 for materials!

  • Jeff - He has a tile roof & wants to know the best underlayment for his project?

Recommendation - This is a tough job! We don't recommend putting a 3-tab shingle under a tile roof...that's usually overkill. Rosie would put down a layer of 15 lb roofing felt, than a layer of 30 lb felt, than add a cap sheet (90 or 100lb) sheet.  Listen to make sure the specifics are correct. For opinions, he can call the experts....Pinnacle Roofing, Lyons Roofing & Durafoam Roofing.

Segment 4 (running time 5:50)

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Frank - He heard us talking about filling in small cracks on a stucco wall....he's about to repaint his home and wants our tips on fixing the spider cracks on his wall.

Recommendation - Start with a pressure wash and then allow it to dry. Get all the lose sand and debris out of the cracks. He can even use a putty knife to knock out all the lose stuff. Rosie will spread in an elastomeric textured caulk in the cracks. If it's textured, get the heaviest texture he can buy and then take a coarse sponge and dob it to match the surrounding texture. Make sure he backrolls the paint and he should be good to go. We recommend using PPG Pittsburg Paints!
