• Scott - Should he use gypsum to supplement his soil for fall gardening?

Recommendation - If he's using sulfur, he wouldn't need to. They basically serve the same purpose.

• Louis - He wants to know what we think of artificial turf?

Recommendation - Make sure you get a really high quality product and have a professional installation done.

Caller:

• Fred - Will the product he's been using to keep tick's off his property be bad for the free roaming chickens they have in the yard now?

Recommendation - It very well could. He'll need to read the label carefully and could also consdier some other options like diatomaceous earth. Just make sure the chickens are out of the area while you apply it.

Callers:

• Lucy - She platned a mesquite sappling last May. The branches are really tall, but the trunk is still just a few inches from the ground. 

Recommendation - The trunk won't grow straight up like she's picturing and Jay walks her through what she can expect. She'll have to eliminate the lower branches to force it to grow vertically.

• Mike - He wants to do a container garden for his fall veggies. What will he need?

Recommendation - All he needs to do is go buy a bag of good potting soil and pour it in! It's that easy. He can add compost later as a supplement.

• Eleanor - Her olive tree has exploded with fruit this year. Are they edible and what does she do with them?

Recommendation - The olives are edible, but it has to be cured and it has to go through a process. Jay has noticed that olive trees are loaded this year. He's not sure why, but it seems to be a big year for it.

• Jacob - He can't get his summer lawn transitioning back to his winter lawn. What could he be doing?

Recommendation - It's all about timing and if the winter lawn goes too long, it can burn up your summer lawn before it starts.

• Filling in sunken living rooms - the details, the fixes and the common mistakes.

Caller:

• Betty - She needs to replace the windows. Should she get vinyl or what type of frame do we reccomend? Plus, does she need to talk to the plaster guy 1st or the window guys 1st?

Recommendation - We'll tackle it in the next segment......

• Romey has a quick interview with comedian Steve Smith from the "Red Green Show" about his upcoming trip to Phoenix.

• Back to Betty's question on windows. Recommendation - The right window installer should be able to work on the plaster themselves. We think she shoud call Pella Windows & Doors. They have all the options and different price points. We really like they're fiberglass (Impervia Line) products. Rosie talks through all the options.

Callers:

• Brad - He wanted to call in to give kudos to A-Authentic Garage Door Service Company. He had a great experience and even got a discount for his military service.

• Lynn - He had 2 back flow preventors installed and since they've been changed, it's been really loud. When the irrigation kicks on in the morning, it is really loud and waking them up.

Recommendation - We investigate and none of it makes any sense. We will have to follow up with Lynn.

• Bridgett - She has 2 AC units. Both have been replaced and one will not cool the home down in the late afternoon.

Recommendation - We'd recommend getting a home energy audit and she did have that done by REEis Air Conditioning & Home Performance and they fixed the major issues.

• I couldn't resist and had to brag about my alma mater, South Dakota State University!
• Rosie talks about recessed lighting & getting rid of them. It dates your home & we discuss why and how to remove them.
• Rosie loves the under-cabinet lighting.

Callers:

• Brandon - He blew fiberglass insulation into his roof after replacing a bunch of different types of existing insulation, but his home feels very humid now. What could it be?

Recommendation - Start with a whole house energy audit. He can contact REEis Air Conditioning & Home Performance or Green ID.

• David - The plumbing in his master bathroom seems to be leaking. It only happens in the mornings, but spits water out and he's not sure what to do.

Recommendation - Remove the shower head and just shower under the half inch pipe for a few days to see if it could be just the "water reducer" in the fixture.  He could just need a new shower head fixture.

• Arthur - His 4 foot wall is showing a crack and it looks like it's between the blocks and on both sides. Is there a way to cover it and not with just paint?

Recommendation - It's small enough that he can use a good elastomeric caulk with sand in it to match the texture. Spray it out with air and then feather in the caulk with a sponge. Listen to Rosie's description for the details.

Callers:

• Greg - Does duct cleaning work....is it really worth it?

Recommendation - It does work if you use the right company. We recommend only using licensed air conditioning contractors. Simply cleaning the duct work and not the rest of the air handler and parts won't get the job done. It could cost $400-$500 to get it done correctly.  Then make sure you're replacing the filters monthly. It should only be done every 5-7 years.

Caller:

• Glen - He is spending a lot of money on water in his fish tanks. Is there a Reverse Osmosis system under the sink he can install himself or does he need an expert to set it up?

Recommendation - It can be a do it yourself job, but make sure he's buying a quality system. Contact Water Treatment Technology to get some advice.

• Discussing converting carports to a garage and what goes into it. It's ot as simple as slapping some siding up and installing an overhead door.

Caller:

• Audra - She had a furniture restoration question and Jennifer recommended Irwin's Furniture Restoration and reminds you that it's a great gift idea for someone during the upcoming holiday season!

• Andy - He accidentally drilled a hole in the wrong place in an outside wall for a light fixture. How can he fill it in?

Recommendation - There is a product made by Custom Products stucco repair. He can fill the hole and let it dry and apply it over the entire area a few days later. Rosie describes the issues with hiding mistakes on smooth surfaces.

• Antonio - The water in his apartment comes out very cloudy. He's heard reverse osmosis is good and heard it creates acidic water. Is that a myth and if it's not, is it bad?

Recommendation - It does become slightly more acidic, but it won't hurt his health. We would set a glass of water on the counter and let it sit for 5 minutes to see if it clears up. Sometimes a small air infiltration can create the cloudy look.
