John Eisenhower and Sarah Maitland talk about the pending monsoon season, excessive heat and The Tree Of The Month: The Palo Brea!
Palo Brea is a durable, thorny desert tree. Angles of attachment of the branches are wider. Blooms pretty yellow flowers in April. They need space to grow. Proper (careful) pruning techniques.
CALLER: New backyard installed. Two watering zones for desert shrubs and purple plums trees. Has some concern about watering too much with excessive heat and avoiding root rot.

Extreme temperatures can run the risk of tree defoliation. John suggests shade cloth to cover those trees that need it.
Monsoon tree preparation for wind. Hot dry wind can dry out trees and plants. Tree tape is good to wrap about thin skinned tree trunks to protect against sun damage.
CALLER: Has a lemon tree with brown spots on the leaves. Suggest 50/50 shade cloth.
CALLER: Has a rogue sissou tree with roots buckling the lawn and tiles. Is there a way to control the root growth. Discussion of root barriers that might work.

Sarah's tips on helping your trees get thru excessive heat. Using drip or soaker hoses around the canopy. Using wood chips or mulch to retain moisture and cool the ground.
