Listen to this segment

Jeff with Harper's Nurseries & Landscape Company joins us for the Landscape Hour!

  • We share what can you plant this time of year and what to watch for in your spring garden
  •  For Arbor Day we discuss "The Magnificent Seven" Trees across Arizona and what it takes to be part of this distinction.

Callers:

  • Marian - She has three palm trees she wants to remove and replace with a fruit or shade trees. How should she go about this?

Recommendation - She needs to measure the space she has and then research plants that will grow into the space nicely.  Dwarf trees might be perfect for her space. She could also find a landscape designer and put a plan together. Just make sure it's the right time of year for planting before removing the existing plants.

  • Elaine - She has yellow spots on the leaves of her tomato plants and now they are turning brown and dying. What can she do?

Recommendation - It could be a lot of issues from bugs, a fertility issue, watering problems....take a picture or put a few leaves in a zip-lock baggie and take it to her local nursery. In her area, she can try A&P Nurseries or Treeland Nurseries.

Segment 2 (running time 6:31)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Tim - He just bought a house and discovered a lemon tree that had been neglected for several years. He ran irrigation to the plant last year and had a bumper crop, but he's not seeing a lot of the flowers turning into fruit. Should he be concerned?

Recommendation - There are several reasons this can occur; improper timing of fertilization, too much or not enough water, weather issues (heavy winds, etc.)  In Tim's situation, it might just take a few years to get healthy. Make sure it's fertilized and watered deeply, not just surface watering frequently.

*We discuss the damage cicadas can cause and how to get rid of them.

Segment 3 (running time 13:15)

Listen to this segment

Get rid of pests with Bonide Products.  The organic solution to keeping your plants insect free! Find their products at Treeland Nurseries in Mesa,  Viola's Flower Garden in Flagstaff and Mesquite Valley Grower's in Tucson.

Callers:

  • Nancy - Her peach tree has developed cankers on the trunk and she thinks it's a critter eating away and she doesn't know what to do.....

Recommendation - It sounds like a flat headed bore and with about a 3rd of it damaged, it sounds like the tree will not survive.  She might have a couple of years left if she takes really good care of it. She can call Chris at Vicente Landscaping to take a look and verify the problem.

*We go back and tackle a question from a listener a few weeks ago about edible bark.

*Some history on a tree at Harper's Nursery. (They've had weddings under the canopy)

*What to expect out in your grass lawn. We share the steps to transitioning to your summer lawn.

Segment 4 (running time 6:07)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Shirley - Her Shamel Ash Tree has roots pushing up through the ground and wants to know if she can cut those back without damaging the tree?

Recommendation - The short answer is "NO."  But, there are some instances that are okay and Jeff talks about when it might acceptable. Be very very careful and it's not a good idea to damage the roots. Call an arborist, they're the experts!

If you have questions for Jeff, visit Harper's Nursery & Landscaping Company!

Recommendation - Robyn with Water Treatment Technologies joins us to help answer. Robyn prefers to run it underground.
