  • Misti talks about some of the things blooming up north in Arizona this time of year.
  • Jay talks about our topic for the week...Trees and what to consider for your yard.

Segment 2 (running time 7:03)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Jim - He has two plants and one is the agave and he's heard that if he cuts off the big stalk, it will prolong the life of the plant. Is that true?

Recommendation - It is true with the agave, but the stalk will plant another plant in it's place, but there isn't a whole lot you can do.

*We discuss succulents versus cactus, etc.

  • Pam - She has a 3 year old ocotillo plant that's not doing well and has a white powdery substance on the leaves. What should she do?

Recommendation - Jay's never heard of this on the ocotillo, so she needs to take it in to a nursery or take a picture to an expert. Verify the water is correct and try Elgin Nursery in her area.

Segment 3 (running time 13:01)

Listen to this segment

Romey talks about Bonide Products and how you can keep the weeds out of you yard. Find their products at Treeland NurseriesViola's or Mesquite Valley Growers.

Callers:

  • Laura - She wants a vine that will grow at about 4,000 foot elevation?

Recommendation - Try the Flowering Jasmine Vine or the Flowering Honeysuckle. It attracts pollinators and is easy to grow. Jay says try wisteria.

  • Katie - She has a 6 year old almond tree that stopped producing fruit last year.  Is there something she should be giving the tree to make sure it produces fruit?

Recommendation - It sounds like it's a pollination problem, not a fertilizer issue. It may not be a "Self pollinator" and might need another tree. She needs bees!

*What makes a plant a self-pollinator...We help you sort it out.

  • Jeff - He has an Ashe Tree that is planted to close to the house and wants to know if he can move it without damaging it?

Recommendation - Waiting about 9 months before the trees lose their leaves next winter....Move deciduous trees when the trees are dormant.

  • Stan - His grapefruit tree is covered in leaf miner's and it's starting to damage the look of the tree. What can he use to get rid of them?

Recommendation - Try Dead Bug's Brew by Bonide or a product with spinosad and that should get rid of it.

  • Susan - She planted zucchini and they are dying off after they grow only 2 or 3 inches long. What is she doing wrong?

Recommendation - It's a flowering issue and the fruit she's seeing is just the flower before the zucchini actually comes in. It needs to pollinate to create the fruit.

Segment 4 (running time 6:13)

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Jessica - She has a queen wreath vine she loves and wants to know why their aren't more here and why do the leaves drop off?

Recommendation - It's a deciduous vine and the leaves will drop off. It's natural for those to grow fast, but they will lose their leaves annually.

*Chris Wellborn from Vicente Landscaping joins us and shares his thoughts on Queen Wreath Vines and what's happening with the landscape in Northern Arizona.

If you have questions for Jay, call Harper's Nursery in Phoenix or Misti at Warner's Nursery in Flagstaff.

Recommendation - This does happen and is fairly common, but Rosie doesn't like that they look "bent."  With the home being 30 years old and no other visible imperfections, it should be okay.  We will follow up with Mike....

Segment 2 (running time 6:39)

*We discuss the bee industry and some of the other issues with the drought overtaking much of the US.

*If you're confused or contemplating a new landscape, make sure to reference the Water Use It Wisley's, Watering Guides

  • Bill - He had a roof leak over his garage, but the tape on the repairs are hanging down. What should be done to repair this and can he do it himself?

Recommendation - This is something he can do himself. Start by taking off the loose tape, clean it up and Rosie breaks down the process for Bill.

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Marsha - She just moved from Northern CA and is concerned about the cicada bugs that are destroying her trees. Do we have any tree suggestions for her in this area that won't attract cicada's?

Recommendation - Unfortunately, she won't have the same types of trees to choose from in Northern California. Tree root systems spread over the surface area to be able to take in enough water for the tree.  Stop into a local nursery (Vicente Landscape) for advice.

Segment 3 (running time 12:05)

We continue our discussion on Bark Beetles and how to protect your trees from them.

Segment 4 (running time 7:15)

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Brenda - She has a mesquite tree in her front yard and she wants to know if she has to be worried about damage the tree could be causing her home? It's about 15 feet wide.

Recommendation - She just needs to verify that sewage lines are not nearby. If they are near an older sewer line, just make sure she's watering very deep down to keep the roots from searching for water in water lines. Barriers are available too, but it sounds like she should be fine if it's watered correctly.
