Tree of the Month:  The Afghan Pine also known as a "Mondell Pine"

• Why we like them and why they do so well here.

• John brought his "Plant Healthcare Specialist," Sara with him today. 
• Why the winter rains are great for our trees health in Arizona.
• With winter rain, what should you do with your irrigation systems?

Caller:

• John - He has a pine with a lot of "dead areas." Is it the blight" we were talking about?

Recommendation - It most likely is blight, but there has also been a mite issue too. The mite's seemed to have moved on, but John suggests fertilizing and impoving the waterig schedule. Trim out the dead wood and improve the soil conditions.

*Tips on trimming trees this time of year.

• Have a fruiting olive tree?.? Now is the time to spray for "fruit suppression."

• Can you plant a tree over a septic system?

Recommendation - Yes, but there are different design types that are susceptible to damage...John walks through the factors that make it okay, but red flags to beware of.

Caller:

• Ken - His backyard is a "Blank Slate" and he has a neighbor with a 2 story home looking on his property. What do we suggest for trees that can screen his property and give him some privacy?

Recommendation - He needs a tree that grows vertically, not horizontally. The afghan pine is a great fit, plus consider shoestring acacia.

• Tree Climbing Events are coming up!

Callers:

• Mike - His lemon tree has one branch that has shot way above every other branch and "looks weird"....

Recommendation - It's usually a root stock that is coming up and is a graft that he can cut off. It's probably stealing nutrients from the rest of the tree and is a good idea to cut it off.

• Paul - His lemons are as big as grapefruit, but are dried out....

Recommendation - It can just be fruit that's carried over from last year. If there was a frost and froze the fruit, it will look dry inside. He can also check the watering, but it doesn't sound like that is the issue since the fruit are still large.

• Tom - He has 2 eucalyptus trees in his yard and sees them all over, but isn't sure which variety it is. He describes the plant and Sara tries to identify the tree.

Recommendation - There are about 13 varieties that grow in Arizona and John talks through what he thinks it might be.

Caller:

• JoAnn - She has an evergreen tree has a side that has turned completely brown. They did put in a cable line in on that side. Would that be causing half the tree to turn brown?

Recommendation - It might be possible that it's the cable. When they dug the trench, it could have damaged the roots on that side. We'd need a picture to determine if it is worth saving.

• Rosie has follow-up from last week and his trip to Duluth, Minnesota. A listener wrote in to talk about his "Coldest Holiday Experience."
• Events happening over the weekend, including the Home, Health and Garden Show in Casa Grande.
• Jennifer talks about a series on "rain harvesting" events put on by the Watershed Management Group.

Caller:

• Scott - He had some mold on his base boards and out on his exterior walls. He thinks moisture is going in to the expansion and getting into his home. Is there a filler he can use to fill the joint to keep the moisture out. Plus, he's considering rain guters. Will that prevent the moisture getting in?

Recommendation - Water is pooling so he'll need to improve the drainage and gutters are a great start. The sidewalk might need to be worked on to get the water draining away from the home. He can use a product from Marvel Masonry called Thoroseal that we like. Rosie walks him through the steps.

Callers:

• Mike - He just changed his water heater and now he's getting hot and cold flashes in his faucet. He's not sure why it's happening.....

Recommendation - It sounds like the on-off valve on the top of the water heater is faulty. Mike suspected it and we agree! Replace the valve and he should be good to go.

• Marcy - She wants to fill in a sunken living room floor. What kind of problems should they beware of and how should we do it?

Recommendation - This is a common problem and we like filling them in with poured concrete, especially since her floor is only sunken down 4 inches. Termite issues can come up with a wood filler and Rosie talks her through all the tips on proper concrete to use. Beware of the moisture in her home for a short time while the concrete dries out. Call Marvel Masonry!

Callers:

• Nancy - She's having an issue with roots in her main plumbing line and water is backing up into her tub and sinks. They found something about 75 feet away in the city line. Will the city fix it or since it's one of their trees, they might incur costs too?

Recommendation - It is a valid concern, but she'll need to find the root of the problem (Ha!) She needs to take it to the city to determine what they can do going forward.

*We discuss the nearby trees and what could be the cause.

• Vicki - Her grout is light color and has been sealed, but now it's dirty and she can't get it cleaned. Do we have any tips?

Recommendation - Using a little amount of soap will help keep it more clean. We would consider another deep cleaning and another grout sealing. That usually keeps it clean for a few years. Consider Phoenix Carpet Repair & Cleaning for the job.

• Carol - The expansion joint on her driveway is deteriorating and needs to be replaced...what should we do?

Recommendation - She needs to get all of it out first and Rosie talks through how and why. Once it's all out, she can fill it with silica sand and backer rod, then cover it with caulking. You can buy it at Marvel Masonry. She could also call Arrowhead Deck Resurfacing.

• Romey loves a product called "Trim a Slab" that's perfect for Carol's problem from the last segment. We'll follow up with this next week.
• With all the recent rains, homes have white fuzz on it. It's called effervesence and Rosie talks through all the problems it creates and what to do about it.

• Chad - He just bought a house and he smells dogs! What can he do to clean it besides vinegar because it's not working.

• Gary - A root has lifted up his sidewalk. He's taken the tree out, but wants to repair it. The problem is that the concrete is sealed and has a coating on them? What are his options?

Recommendation - It's going to be impossible to match the coating he has. If it cracks while he's working on it, consider putting in pavers in place of it. Rosie talks about way to do that and ways to save his existing slab.

• Joe - He's remodeling his bathroom and wants to replace the doors and drawers. He wants to do it himself and can't find them anywhere.

Recommendation - He could call Irwin's Cabinets for advice or our Ann at Rosie On The House Remodeling.

We tackle a "Frequently Asked Question" about changing a car port into an attached a garage or converting an attached garage into a family room. Issues & considerations:

• Drainage.
• Fire Code Restrictions

Caller:

• Friancis - She put in a new AC/Heating unit in last year. Since the cold weather hit the last few weeks, she's smelling an odor and she's concerned. Should she should call the gas company or an AC company?

Recommendation - We'd call both the company that installed the unit and the gas company. Sometimes, when you fire up the heater, it can give a funky smell from lint and debris on the heating coils. It might not be a major issue, but it's important to solve it.
