*Rosie talks about the Weed Dragon Torch Kit & Bob at Grandma's Farms in Phoenix.

Desert Dwellers Tip for the Week:

Memorial Day is one of 3 weekends to fertilize your citrus trees (and others too!)  It's a great time for dethatching and aerating your lawn and verify your sprinkler systems are set correctly for the summer heat.

Tips for Fire Prevention from Chris Wellborn:

  • How to prepare you property.  Remove dead wood and debris around your home.
  • New Homes: Choose the right plants, the correct spacing and best setup to help protect your home.
  • Prescott's "Water Conservation Incentive" Program

Ken Lain introduces plants to consider if you live in Northern Arizona:

  • Salvia Flower's are colorful and flame resistant.
  • New Sage "blue marble" are hearty and reseed throughout the yard. (deer don't like them either!)

Segment 2 (running time 6:04)

Listen to this segment

Ken & Romey continue talking about plants to consider in Northern Arizona:

  • Purple Leaf Plum Trees
  • Pear Trees create beautiful flowers.

*We discuss "chill hours" and what that means to fruits in different elevations across the state.

Segment 3 (running time 11:33)

Listen to this segment

Chris and Romey talk about the Piyon Pine Scale attacking trees in Arizona.

  • How to spot them.
  • Treating them?  Ken created a systemic called "plant protector" he made for listeners in Northern Arizona. Find it at Watter's Garden Center.

Caller:

  • Frank - He is having trouble getting his Jacaranda tree or Hibiscus plant to bloom..what can he do to promote blooming? They're about 10 years old.

Recommendation - He needs to find a fertilizer high in phosphorous for both. That is what promotes blooming.  Freezing can slow blooming, but there are several other factors to consider. Hibiscus can use a fertilizer specific to roses. Bonide has a product you can use.

*Grass species that thrive in the cooler climates.  (Fescue Grass is #1 variety in NAZ)

*Ken supplements "Creeping Thyme" in the lawn to cut down on maintenance.

Segment 4 (running time 7:11)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Nancy - Her rosemary plants have spit bugs all over them and wants to know how to get rid of them?

Recommendation - If you use it for culinary purposes, use an organic spray like triple action or neem oil to eliminate them, while ensuring it's safe to eat later.

  • Debbie - She has an indoor/outdoor cat and it's chewing on the oleander plants. Will Repels All from Bonide work to keep it out of them?

Recommendation - Bonide makes a product for rabbits, dogs, etc. Just make sure to treat specifically for dogs and cats, not just deer and other critters.

Ken shares one more of his favorite plants, the dahlia.  They grow very big and have several colors to choose from.

Thanks to Chris from Vicente Landscaping, Ken Lain from Watters Garden Centers and Jay with Harper's Nursery & Landscaping Center.

  • Kenny - He picked up treated lumber from a big box store and installed it after being told it was "ground contact" approved. The inspector rejected his work and he wants to know how many grades of pressure treated woods are approved for ground contact?

Recommendation - There aren't any wood treatments that should be used in direct contact with the ground. He's getting bad advice from the store and it should be 12 - 16 inches from the soil.

Segment 2 (running time 6:44)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Clark - "Nothing spells catastrophe like a ruptured water tank at 5:30 in the morning"  It's a solar water heater and there is a motorized zone valve stuck open between the circulating pump and collector. Can he replace that with a mechanical check valve?

Recommendation - Tom discovers the valve was intended to be a back-flow valve, so it should be fine to use the check valve, but to verify we'll hook Clark up with a solar heater expert from the Rosie Network.
