Segment 1 (running time 10:43)

Listen to this segment

Broadcasting from the Grand Opening of the New Design Center at Harper's Nursery and Landscaping Company!!

We're joined by a group of our favorite Rosie-Associated Representatives:

Tip of the Week: It's the perfect time to be planting trees, shrubs and vines! The soil temperature's are still warm as the outdoor air cool's down.

***Snowbirds should be planting in the fall, so they're established before you leave for the summer. (Even if you've got a great neighbor who's watching your yard)

Caller:

  • Caroline - She found boring in her bird of paradise and wants to know what she can do to stop it.

Recommendation - She can treat it with spinosad fertilizer. It sounds like it's full grown, so treating is the first option!

Segment 2 (running time 8:04)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Grant - Every year he plants flowers in a planter outside his home and wants some advice on soil treatment in addition to his current methods.

Recommendation - Always add organic material. With our heat and lack of water, organic additions are a must! Try compost from Hickman's or  Mel's Mix from GroWell.

  • Cindy - She's had a very full bougainvillea that was eaten alive by something very quickly while she was gone for a few days.

Recommendation - A caterpillar has been running rampant in the area recently. Apply systemic granules. Biofeed or Bonide have the right product.

  • Vince - He took out a tree recently and wants a few suggestions on shade trees that have limited cleanup required.

Recommendation - Jay likes the Live Oak...strong and sturdy.

Live Question from a Listener on location:

  • Bill - He planted a Texas Red Oak about 5 years ago, but the last 2 years it looks like it's starting to deteriorate and can't figure out why.

Recommendation - It's Salt!!  This particular tree suffers because of the drainage and salt in our soils. He'll needs to increase the drainage and fertilizer that "opens the soils."  Water deeper to drain away the salts.
