Recommendation - If it's a new area, add compost 1st. After that, she can add natural fertilizers like bone meal or blood meal, etc. Romey mentions Mel's Mix.

  • Dan - He had a tree fall over in his yard. He propped it back up and wants advice on treating it to help it survive.

Recommendation - It may not be salveagable, but fertizlizing it can help a plant in shock. Beyond that, stake it properly and make sure it's pruned and watered correctly.

*Rosie jumps in and we talk more about watering and what the best way to stake a tree.

  • Diane - Her 30 year old pine tree is getting too close to her gas meter according to the H.O.A., but she thinks it should be fine after this long. What do we think?

Recommendation - It sounds like it should be okay, but she needs an arborist to be sure. Find them online at the Arizona Community Tree Council's site.

  • Tom - His olive tree lost several large branches during the last storm and was told he had root rot. Is this something that will kill the whole tree or can he save it?

Recommendation - Eventually root rot will kill a tree and if it's one of the main diseases that effect olive trees, he could be in trouble. Bottom line - It could be the wind but will need more investigation to be sure.

Keith gets to brag about his dad....Congratulations to Don on becoming the new head of the Arizona Nursery Association starting next year.

Caller:

  • Susan -She has a few citrus trees and they've all sunken about 6 to 8 inches. Does she need to replant them to correct the problem?

Recommendation - It's not usually a good idea to replant them, but just add new soil to create a natural bowl and it should be fine.

  • Planting trees to deep is a very common problem and can be very problematic to a trees health.

  • Bill - He had a couple valves replaced and now they're stuck. He's wondering if there is a way to lubricate them?

Recommendation - He'd have to take it apart and apply "plumbers grease" to the parts. It might be easier to just replace it. The problem is sediment building up because of the hard water we have in AZ.

  • Ryan - He's looking at taking on a paver project and putting part of it on top of a concrete slab. He's been told he needs to put sand down first. Does that sound right?

Recommendation - Yes, it does. All the pavers are glued on the edge, but the middle pavers are all put down on sand. Rosie describes Belgard's "Overlay" pavers and why he loves some of their latest products.

Recommendation - Rosie thinks he should call Dave at Intermountain Mechanical or Green Valley Cooling & Heating for advice.

  • Julie - She needs to replace her A-C unit and wants to know what to ask and some advice on what she should buying.

Recommendation - It's not usually a good idea to buy used units. Rosie recommends using his consumer guide and then describes all the factors she should consider before making a purchase.

*Rosie investigates more of Julie's situation and talks about "whole home energy audits" & Time of Day Plans with the utility company, plus the importance of proper ductwork in your home too.
