Leaks can happen instantly or take a long time to soak through.  The most economical roof is the shingle which comes in various grades.  Install isn't time consuming.

Carefully read the warranty especially when it says 'Lifetime' Warranty'.  There can be conditions.

Discussion of wood shake roofs.  Costly install and maintenance.

Tile roofs come in concrete and clay in various shapes and sizes.

Two components to a roof:  the tile type and the underlay.  The felt underlay is the most important providing real protection from the elements.

Tyler explains the types of felt underlay.  And how 2 layers of underlay can double the roof lifespan.

How to inspect the underlay.  Keep in mind 'a pitched roof is designed for water shedding, not water proofing'

Discussion of the flat roofs.  The history of some of the flat roof products.  Built Up Roll Down involved hot tar.  Torch down method.  Foam roofs impervious to everything except sunlight.  Elastomeric coatings.

Main purpose of tile roof is to protect the underlay.  Cracked or broken tile can slowly damage underlay.

Proactive way is to have your tile roof inspected.  Reactive way is wait for the leaks to start.

Tile roofs are not all nailed down.  Tyler explains.
