Segment 1 (running time 12:24)

Listen to this segment
Jay's Tips of The Week:

  • No shocker, but it's HOT!!! Make sure to check that irrigation system to get us through the hottest part of the year.
  • Mulching around trees is great. It helps hold in moisture and cools the ground.
  • Keep weeds under control so they don't steal the nutrients your plant needs.

Rosie has been using Bonide Products to keep rabbits and critters out of his back yard and he loves it!!!

Letter from a listener: We had several questions on fungus and how to get rid of it.

Recommendation - Over-watering is the only thing reason you should see that this time of year.

Callers:

  • Ray - Has an Ashe Tree that looks healthy on the outside but several branches inside the canopy are dying.

Recommendation - That's fairly normal and usually means it's not getting enough sun or nutrients inside the canopy. It's fine to prune these out.

  • Paul - What are our recommendation on watering a yard.....flooding every couple days or shorter daily sessions.

Recommendation - Jay discusses the differences in each method.

Segment 2 (running time 6:24)

Listen to this segment
Caller:

  • Joe wanted to know if there were different grades of Bermuda Grass?

Recommendation - Yes! Jay discusses the differences.

More Tips from Jay:

  • This is the time of year to deal with Palms. Pruning, treating, & Planting!
  • Jay discusses tips on planting in Arizona Desert soils and for this time of year.

Segment 3 (running time 13:07)

Listen to this segment
We discuss common mistakes of planting trees the industry used to make and what the proper methods are.

Congratulations to Jay on being a new Grandpa!!

Callers:

  • Bob - He has a bunch of blueberries and wants to know how to make wine?
Recommendation - Romey's going to research!

  • Karen - She has an enormous Ashe tree in her backyard and it's shedding seeds everywhere. What can she do to decrease the mess?

Recommendation - There's really not a whole lot she can do......She'll have to weigh the benefits of all that shade versus the mess.

  • Mark - He wants to know if he planted his sweet potatoes correctly.

Recommendation - Jay shares his ideas.

Segment 4 (running time 6:41)

Listen to this segment
Callers:

  • Matt - Has worms in his compost tumbler and they usually die in the heat, but did not this time. What are they and can he use it for his planting?

Recommendation - It's a larvae of some kind and should be fine to use. If he's still worried, put some diatomaceous earth down to kill them.

  • Jim - Put in a few ash trees and most are healthy and look great except for one runt.

Recommendation - Sounds like a sun burned tree trunk that needs some paint protection. If it hasn't caught on after 4 years, it might be time to replace the tree.

  • Jamie - Has an Australian Bottle tree and every year the leaves drop and the branches sag a lot. Is this normal?

Recommendation - All of his issues are normal for this type of tree.

Segment 1 (running time 11:40)

Listen to this segment
Rosie discusses the "Do's and Don'ts" to reducing your cooling bills this summer!

Don'ts:

  1. Don't over-insulate your attic.

  2. Don't power vent your attic.

  3. Radiant Barriers are not the answer.

Do's:
  1. Shade Screens.

  2. Put timers on all your exhaust fans.

  3. Get yourself on a Time of Day Plan from the energy company.

Callers:

  • Bernie - Has an attached garage that has been converted into a hobby room. He can't cool it down enough to work in.

Recommendation - The AC needs to run longer or overnight so he's not cooling it off during the mid-day heat. He might need a bigger AC unit too.

  • Ken - Wants our opinion on concrete counter top's and who can do it for him?

Segment 2 (running time 7:08)

Listen to this segment
Callers:

  • Burt - Has a window pane that broke on a newer double pane window and is having a warranty issue.

Recommendation - It should still be under warranty. We'd start writing certified letters because that should still be covered.

Digital Newsroom:

  • Letter from Richard: Is the former Arizona Ram Jack now Arizona Foundation Solution?

Answer: Yes! Visit them here!

  • Letter from Sara: What product did Rosie use to get rid of rabbits?

Answer: "Repels All" from Bonide.

  • Letter from Kevin: Has a few questions about roofing and having Central Basin Roofing re-roof his home.

Answer: Ask Dave from Central Basin Roofing. That's an on-site judgement and Dave is great!

Segment 3 (running time 12:20)

Listen to this segment
Callers:

  • Jim - Has some condensation between the panes of his double pane windows. What can he do besides replace a window?

Recommendation - The inert gas in between the two panes has evaporated and the seals have been broken. Squeaky Clean is one option. Check your warranty and think about just replacing the glass. Compare your pricing options.

  • David - He needs to replace his window and has questions about the frame material type.

Recommendation - We love the Fiberglass Product (Impervia Line) from Pella Windows & Doors!

  • Nick - New from Seattle and he's trying to sell his home back in Washington. He has some railroad ties in his foundation. Do we know why it's an issue?

Recommendation - There is creosote in the ties and shouldn't be an issue if they don't "off-gas" inside the home.

Segment 4 (running time 7:08)

Listen to this segment
We talk about our Arizona Staycation package!

Rose is mountain biking in Flagstaff this weekend and got there in a brand new Ford F-150 from Sanderson Ford. She's staying at the Best Western Pony Soldier Inn & Suites and scored a huge gift basket from the Cactus Candy Company!

Congratulations to another winner....in Rebecca in Glendale!!

Callers:

  • Don - Has a block wall around his home and his neighbor's have blocked the drainage openings in the bottom. Is that legal?

Recommendation - Check with the city to see if it's illegal to do this.
