Segment 1 (running time 13:42)

Listen to this segment
In-Studio with John Eisenhower of Integrity Tree Service.

Tip of the Week: If you have a palm tree, this is the time of year to get your trimming done. Listen for dates on each type of palm and when you should get to pruning.

Richard Adkins with the Arizona Community Tree Service presents our feature tree for the month; the Desert Ironwood tree.

Callers:

  • Beth - Has buffalo grass coming in and wants to get rid of it. What should she do?

Recommendation - Grab a shovel! Unfortunately, it's just a lot of work with no tricks. Dig it up and back fill the missing soil.

  • Carol - She has a lemon tree and did not trim it last year. The branches are breaking off and she's wondering if she can prune it this time of year.

Recommendation - Lemon's trees produce a lot of fruit and thinning out the fruit early in the growth cycle will take some of the weight off of the branches when it starts to ripen.

Tree of the Month: The Desert Ironwood!

Callers:

  • Brett - He has a maple tree in his backyard and he's done the deep watering and they've been healthy, but this year the leaves are turning yellow.

Recommendation - Get to a local Arborist to find the problem. With several trees dying, his concerns are valid. Yellow leaves usually indicates a soil problem....too wet or too dry. Call Vicente Landscaping!

For a certified Arborist in your area, visit the International Society of Arborists website.

Segment 3 (running time 12:21)

Listen to this segment
Richard Adkins with the Arizona Community Tree Service is in-studio and John Eisenhower talks about his many awards!!

Did you know the Desert Ironwood has edible bean pods?!?!  We give you cooking instructions and you'll have a healthy snack from your very own tree!

Callers:

  • Gary - Has a Fan Palm near a water feature and wondering if the root system will damage the foundation of the feature.

Recommendation - Palms can definitely damage the structure, so finding a certified arborist is a great idea. Visit AZtrees.org.

  • Peggy - Her Ash tree is several years years old and now the center is thinning out and the wood is falling down. Is there anything she can do to help it out?
Recommendatin - Be cautious about the carpenter worm who's been invading the Phoenix area. Ash trees are susceptible to sunburn too. It's a good idea to call a certified arborist.

  • Jimmy - Has a tree that flowers beautifully for about a month but then it struggles through the summer months.

Segment 4 (running time 6:58)

Listen to this segment
Callers:

  • Jack - Bought a home with beautiful Desert Willow Trees that flower so rapidly that it fills up his pool almost every day. Is there something he can use to cut the flowering down?

Recommendation - There are a few products that can cut it back down, but it's just going to be a lot of work.

  • Paul - Has a Chinese Elm he needs to get rid of. He's cut it off to a 2 foot stump. What's the best way to remove the stump?

Recommendation - Grinding the stump down to about 10 inches deep and he can chemically treat the stump to keep it from growing back.

Callers:

  • Mary - During the last storm she noticed that her patio was leaking. After removing the drywall she found mold. How can they get rid of it?

Recommendation - Avoid drywall on the outside of a home in most situations. Instead, seal it up and use a T111 Plywood and stain it.  JLC Enterprises uses an aluminum product that might be a great alternative too.

  • Emilio - Has a bad odor coming from his shower and not sure what to do about it.

Recommendation - It could be a bad shower pan, but will take some more investigating.

  • Dave wants to know when the watt rate changes from on-peak to off-peak hours for your utility company. It depends on the plan you pick.

    • Richard - He has a mismatched AC and Heat unit and it quit this morning. Should he replace the entire unit?

Recommendation - With such an old unit in the home and it's mismatched parts, the upgrade is probably due. Call Reeis or Integrity Air Conditioning and he'll feel an incredible difference his home.

    • Gus - He's a veteran and has 2 patio lights by the garage door and wants to illuminate a flag at night. Can he tap into the existing lights to set this up?

    Segment 1 (running time 11:55)

    Listen to this segment

In-Studio with Chris Stanfield of Stampede Plumbing

    The guys discuss garbage disposal's.

    • How big of a disposal do you need?
    • Operate them the proper way.
    • Cleaning them and eliminating odors.
    • We discuss Chris and Bill's favorite brand.
    • Read your owner's manual!

    Callers:

    • Wayne - Has an odor issue that is only happening in the evening. He has p-traps and doesn't think the vent is too short outside.

Recommendation - The P-trap is probably working fine, but it's probably still the roof vent that's causing the issue. It's your cheapest option for a quick fix. Otherwise, it's coming from the kitchen sink, so try running ice and lemons through the disposal and clean the back of the flap in the disposal.

    Segment 2 (running time 6:55)

    Listen to this segment
    Callers:

    • Laura - She's tired of waiting for her hot water to reach her shower. Is there anything to do to speed the process up so she's not wasting so much water.

Recommendation - She can add a circulating pump, a metlund pump or a tankless water heater. All these options can be expensive. Unfortunately, it's a luxury that costs money.

    Segment 3 (running time 12:03)

    Listen to this segment
We continue our conversation on Tank-less Water Heaters and Circulating pumps to combat hot water taking too long to get to the shower.

    Callers:

    • Bill - Every time he turns his outdoor irrigation on, he hears a hissing sound inside his home.

Recommendation - It's usually an anti-syphon system that creates the noise. A pressure test will help make sure it's not too much pressure on the system.

    • Bill - When he turns his hose on outside, it's leaking around the handle. Is there a way to fix this without replacing the whole unit?

Recommendation - Yes, Chris explains the process to replacing the hose bib instead of the whole unit.

    • Mike - Bought a home and the shower in his guest bathroom has an odor and a plumber told him there's no P-trap. Is there a product he can use without tearing into the flooring of the shower.

Recommendation -  It's against code to put in a shower without a P-trap. A lazy plumber might have installed it improperly to move the drain. Chemicals won't help him and Chris & Bill discuss his options.

    Segment 4 (running time 7:15)

    Listen to this segment

    Callers:

Recommendation - Arizona water is very hard and can damage our faucets quicker than in most places. If it's more than 5-10 years old, it's probably best to replace it.

We discuss Low-Flow Toilets and which is the best!!
