Segment 3 (running time 12:59)
Listen to this segment
Caller:
- Dee - She has a few oleanders and the trees are yellowing and turning brown. Is it water related?
Recommendation - It sounds like she could water less frequently and deeper. John describes the watering schedule and how overwatering can lead to yellowing. There's a small chance it has a disease called xylella fastidiosa. If it is the disease, they'll need to be taken out, unfortunately as their is no known cure.
*We talk about alternatives to replace the oleander bushes. Plus, we tackle the 2nd part of Dee's question about spider mites.
Text From a Listener:
- How should they trim back Texas Ranger & Bird of Paradise Trees.
Recommendation - It's a great time for pruning. The Texas Ranger is pretty tough and can be cut back quite a bit, just not down to the ground like an oleander. Bird of Paradise can be cut back significantly, but not down to the ground either.
Segment 4 (running time 6:48)
Listen to this segment
- Details on the Tour De Trees Events.
Text From a Listener:
- Homeowner has twisted mytrle trees and wants to know how to treat them.
Recommendation - They are pretty small and tricky to prune. Be selective on reduction cuts on the outside. Don't use a hedge trimmer. Go with a hand pruner. They are susceptible to sunburn, so be careful.
*John talks about over-pruning that causes sunburn.
Remember you can reach John at Integrity Tree Serivice during the week!

Recommendation - We answer in the next segment.
Segment 2 (running time 6:31)
Listen to this segment
Answering Rick's Question from the last segment. We ask a few more questions to make sure we understand his situation.
Recommendation - It is not too late for tax credits. He'll need to talk with a tax advisor and should be eligible for state and national tax credits. 10 percent reduction is not enough and he should be demanding a site visit from the installer.
Segment 3 (running time 12:48)
Listen to this segment
- Rosie talks with Joanna from Green Valley Cooling & Heating about their company and service area.
- Mike talks about government statutes that businesses are supposed to use to outline what solar should save them. Some companies overstate useage and utility rate increases to make numbers look better than the reality. BEWARE OF SOLAR COMPANIES!!!
- Mike shares what homeowners should be expecting from solar companies.
- Misconceptions around going off the grid completely with solar power.
- Steps taken to make sure your home is suitable for solar panels.
Text From a Listener:
- Is solar available for manufactured homes?
Recommendation - Depends on the roofing. If it's simply a metal roof, then it is not a good candidate for solar. House orientation is key too. East/West facing homes are not great candidates, usually.
Caller:
- Steve - He knows several homeowners that have installed solar and they are not saving a dime!
Recommendation - You should see a savings right away, so something is clearly wrong with these situations.
*The crew discusses what to expect for the average home & payback expectations.
Segment 4 (running time 6:46)
Listen to this segment
Caller:
- Ron - He just wanted to call in to talk about his solar success story. He paid significantly less than the previous caller and saw a solid return on his investment. He's even putting it on his new home after selling the home he's talking about. Listen to be clear on what he's done and his return.
