Segment 1 (running time 12:00)

Listen to this segment
In-Studio with Bill Jenkins of Think Green Irrigation & Landscaping!

Tip of the Week: Be diligent in checking to make sure your landscaping irrigation and hardware are working properly. Monsoon season brings storms and damage to irrigation could mean trouble for your yard.

*Consumer Warning!  Always beware of shady (no pun intended) contractors who take advantage of downed trees after storms.

*We discuss what it takes to keep your lawn looking good through the extreme heat of mid-summer.  (Hint: Average lawns need up to 58" of rain in a single year)

Callers:

  • Katie - She bought huckleberry ice cream and wants to know what kind of fruit that is.

  • Bill - He wants to know what we think of dichondra as ground cover.

Recommendation - It's possible, but beware it's sensitive and requires some shade and a lot of water. It's susceptible to the cold too.

Segment 2 (running time 6:49)

Listen to this segment
Callers:

  • Tom -  Is it too late to seed his patchy hybrid grass areas this time of year and he has a question on leaky irrigation. He's also the winner of a Grillbot from us a few weeks back and loves it!!

Recommendation - No to the seeding grass and his irrigation shouldn't be leaking at the control valve. Check it out to make sure it's okay. Find hardware at Sprinkler World.

Segment 3 (running time 11:59)

Listen to this segment
Jennifer shares tips on harvesting Prickly Pear. For more go to Desert Harvester's Website!

Consider Water Harvesting!

We discuss the benefits and Rosie's talks about our friends from The Solar Store and their Water Harvesting System.

Letters from Listeners:

  • Claire - Her Lantana plant just won't bloom.....

Recommendation - That's usually pretty easy to grow, so verify the watering and add some fertilizer.

  • Katie - Her mother just purchased a home and wants some privacy, but doesn't want to put up a fence. She bought Oleander and now she's been told it's poisonous. Is that true?

Recommendation - They are a poisonous plant. If she wants an alternative, consider something like the Orange or Yellow bells plant instead.

Callers:

  • Bruce - He's had his lawn for 26 years, but now he has large dry patches everywhere. What are his options?

Recommendation - Bruce mentioned a citrus tree....bermuda grass hates shade. Make sure the rye grass doesn't grow too long into the season, inhibiting the start of the bermuda lawn.

  • Doug - His irrigation system isn't working correctly. How does he know what's wrong...is it the controller?

Segment 4 (running time 6:52)

Listen to this segment
Callers:

  • Nick has a grapefruit tree that's not producing any fruit.

Recommendation - Young grapefruit trees take time to start producing and with the freezes this year, he should probably just wait a few seasons for the tree to get established.

  • Jason - He had his lawn re-sodded 2 years ago and he also has a mesquite tree creating a lot of shade. Did his landscaper make the right choice for his sod?

If you need ideas for creating an oasis in your very own backyard, call Bill Jenkins with Think Green Irrigation & Landscaping!

      Segment 2 (running time 7:00)

      Listen to this segment
      Callers:

      • Sara - She has a 34 year old home and after several upgrades, they still have high energy bills. Every contractor says that their upgrade will start saving them more money. Where would Rosie start?

Recommendation - They are already "Super Cooling" and it sounds like her costs are fairly normal and run the AC longer in the day to take full advantage of her off peak rate on her utilities.

      Letters form Listeners with Romey!

      Segment 3 (running time 12:36)

      Listen to this segment
      Callers:

      • Bob - He came home after a micro-burst of rain came through his neighborhood and found water in his home. Where should he turn for help?

Recommendation - With water ponding outside, we're guessing it's an issue with the stucco up against his stem wall. Caulk is key, but be careful not to plug up drainage holes though.

Romey shares his tricks for being prepared for the power going out or having water shut down. Click the guide, here.

Remember to sign up for the Sanderson Ford Arizona Staycation!!  Congratulations to our last winner who took a trip to the Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel. She had a blast. Sign up for the Historic Train Rides!!

      Segment 4 (running time 6:42)

      Listen to this segment
      Callers:

      • Stephanie - Can she use glass block to replace a window in an east facing bathroom?
Recommendation - Glass block in one window and in the wrong location can really heat up a home.

      • Charles - He has a window leak in his kitchen and the water is damaging the drywall and has gotten really bad. What should he do?

Recommendation - It sounds like a flashing issue and needs to be taken care of asap. In Phoenix, call Stucco Renovations.

We share fun ideas from listeners about their projects with the idea to "Recycle, Re-purpose and Reuse!"

In-Studio with Rosie's neighbor, Jerry. He and his wife built "Rosie's Favorite House."

It's a low-maintenance home built to enjoy retirement. He and his wife want to enjoy what should be their "Golden Years" instead of others who end up spending time in "Repairing Years"

Jerry shares their thought process from concept to design. Taking the time to carefully design the space for your lifestyle and to minimize everything from maintenance to the number of steps to move between areas of the home.

      Segment 2 (running time 6:54)

      Listen to this segment
Jerry explains how he ended up in his home.

      • How did they decide Phoenix was the right place for them to retire?
      • Choosing a neighborhood that's the best fit for them.
      • How did they decide on an Architect for the design?
      • Pairing his Architect with a qualified Contractor that will work together.

      Caller:

      • Jerry - His asphalt shingles are tearing off when it gets windy. He knows he needs a new roof, but does he need to tear off the old shingles or can he lay it right over the top of the old layer?

Recommendation - Going over the old layer is fine for code, but he should get a Rosie-Certified Roofer to take a look at it before he makes that decision. Find a roofer in Phoenix here. In Tucson, click here.  Northern Arizona, click here.

      Segment 3 (running time 11:54)

      Listen to this segment
See the work of Mike Rust, the Organic Architect. He's worked with Jerry to design the low-maintenance we're calling "Rosie's Favorite House!"

We discuss the keys to building a home and how to avoid common mistakes that compromise your vision.  Make it a smooth process by picking every single detail before construction begins.   Listen as Rosie and Jerry shares their tips.

      RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!!!

      Segment 4 (running time 6:55)

      Listen to this segment
If you're interviewing builders and contractors, how do you know you're getting the cheapest price in your market?.?

Questions from our Facebook fan page:

      • Dave - Can you still buy integra block?

Recommendation - Yes, you can still get it. Call Superlite or Quality Block.

      • Judy - Do the earth bermed rocks meant to catch water or are the just to provide extra insulation?

Recommendation - Jerry knew about the thermal advantage, but it was really more about aesthetics.
