John from Integrity Tree Service and Greg Peterson with The Urban Farm join us for the Landscape Hour!!!

*We're giving away Gold-Dipped Roses from Jewels & Estate Gallery By G. Darrell Olson.

Tip of the Week: It's prime time to prune.  Trees, shrubs, frost damaged branches. This time of year is past the frost season and will also give the plants time to recover before the summer heat.

  • Greg talks about edible landscapes. He shares his mission and his history.  His Urban Farm is his home and you can learn about it here.  He's also a fan of a favorite of Jennifer's,  Desert Harvester's in Tucson.
  • Rosie and Greg talk about tortillas made out of the mesquite beans.

John talks about pruning fruit trees and the challenges it creates.  Take a class at the Desert Botanical Gardens or for the 1st time, join John at Integrity Tree Service for a lesson!  Sign up here!

Segment 2 (running time 6:28)

Listen to this segment

John channels the Beatles and sings for his wife on Valentine's Day.....You'll Love It!!!

Callers:

  • Rich - He wants some advice on buying a desert museum palo verde.....he's not sure between seed grown or hybrids.

Recommendation - He doesn't know much about the seed grown trees, just make sure the plant has wide attachments at the base of the tree between the main stems.

  • Larry - He planted tomatoes in September and they never blossomed. He covered them in the winter, but still nothing. What should he do?

Recommendation - Add organic fertilizer, because this is the best time of year for growing tomatoes.

Segment 3 (running time 13:32)

Listen to this segment

John and Greg discuss his vision for Phoenix when it comes to gardening and growing food in the city!

  • Food Everywhere!
  • Educating the population is his biggest goal.
  • Make a difference!
  • How to have a happy tree.

Callers:

  • Gabe - He wants to know if he can grow a satsuma tree in Arizona and if so, where can he buy one?

Recommendation - Yes! Pick one up at Treeland Nurseries in Mesa. Greg says add wood chips and mulch for a healthy tree.  He could add a shade cloth in the severe summer heat if it's still sensitive, but it should be fine if he plants it right now.

*Water fruit trees twice a month in the summer months, once a month during winter. Over-watering is a very common mistake.

*Drip versus Flood Irrigation.

  • Shirlene - She has a grapefruit and lemon tree that aren't producing fruit.  She knows its time to fertilize, but does that help the fruit or is it just to keep the tree healthy.

Recommendation - Research shows fertilizing this time of year is key for a healthy fruit producing tree.  It won't have an affect on the existing fruit, but will help next years crop.

Segment 4 (running time 6:11)

Listen to this segment

John talks about restoring sheered shrubs and how they should be pruned and grown back to its normal shape and to control overgrown bushes that can takeover a yard.

Callers:

  • Steve - He has a 20 year old mesquite tree and it drops black tarry substance all over the yard and his sidewalk. He's used sealers to try and stop it, but nothing is working.

Recommendation - The tar substance is called "slime flux" and it's a mild bacteria infection. It's a natural occurrence. John recommends wrapping the wounds with burlap to soak it up.

*Keith called and wanted to know our opinion on the irrigation stakes driven deep into the ground next to trees to water deeper.  John thinks this method works, but just watering in fertilizer is a better method.

If you have questions about trees in your landscape or need trimming done around your home, call Integrity Tree Service!

Thanks to Greg Peterson with Urban Farm for joining us today too!
