In-Studio with Bill Jenkins of Think Green Irrigation & Landscaping!

Tip of the Week:  The seasons are changing, it's cooler and time to start planning for setting up your yard!  The holidays aren't as far away as you think and if you'd like to have the space upgraded, now is the time to get started.

*It's a great time of the year to plant just about anything. Trees.....getting them established before next years summer heat.

Callers:

  • Peggy - Here rose bush looks a little rough and wants to know what she should do to promote growth.

Reommendation - Fertilize them and prune just a little bit this time of year and wait. She should see some blooms fairly soon.

We talk pre and post emerginent to control weeds during the monsoon season. Or you could simply call Scottsdale Weed Control!

Segment 2 (running time 8:00)

We try to make you hungry and talk through creating an outdoor kitchen!  Take advantage of our cooler weather and spend more time outside!

*Lighting is inexpensive and creates a warm and inviting space.

*If you're installing irrigation....add wiring for lighting and stereos. If the trench is open, take advatnage.  (stereo speakers should be pointed toward your home, NOT away.  The sound quality will be better and your neighbors will thank you.

Callers:

  • Pam - She's wondering if anyone else is having problems with ants after the storms...

Recommendation - Yes! Rain will bring out the insects. Use products by Bonide!

Segment 3 (running time 13:21)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Ed - He went to a desert landscape in his front yard and he's fighting the same weeds every year. What is our suggestion to finally eliminate the weeds.

Recommendation - It's all about the Pre Emergent....if applied properly and the correct time of year, this eliminates the annual weed takeover in his yard.

*Bill describes the difference between monocot and dicot plants. Homeowners make common mistakes tying to eleminate different types of weeds without understanding the difference.  Be careful not to overdue it!

  • Ersula - Her Dichondra is taking over the yard and she wants to know what to do..

Recommendation - It will probably take some manual labor to take out those weeds already grown in. Using the correct weed killer will kill it.

The days are getting shorter and Bill talks us through lighting schemes that will help illuminate your home and add effects that will make coming home fun!  Lighting is an inexpensive way to add creativity and show off your artistic side! Check out some of Bill's proejcts, here!

  • Delores - Here African Sumac tree has suckers showing up everywhere in her yard and her landscaper doesn't want to spray them under the canopy because he's afraid it will kill the whole tree.

Recommendation - Find an herbicide that is a foliage killer, but she really needs a professional to take care of the problem.

Segment 4 (running time 6:27)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Gabe - He and his wife found a specific tree in the Louisiana they like and he's wants to know where we recommend finding it..

Recommendation - Call Greenfield Citrus. Most of the time, if it's hard to find, it's because it won't grow in our climate. Try Tropic Mango Nursery too.

We wrap up the Garden hour talking about lighting and how we've moved from pouring concrete to installing pavers. Like pavers from Superlite!
