Segment 1 (running time 12:37)

Listen to this segment

Jay with Harper's Nursery & Landscaping Company is here to take questions about anything out in the yard!

Tip of the Week: August 1st.....It's a day that you can go from planting 4 or 5 veggies in the garden to 14 or 15. You're garden soil needs to be prepped and Jay lists several plants you can get in the ground.

**Here's Jay's Planting Guide!

We also have Julie Murphee with the Arizona Farm Bureau in studio. We discuss when and where great local veggies can be bought.

*Find great recipes for fresh fruit and veggies from your own garden or from fresh local providers at Fill Your Plate!

Caller:

  • Roger - He planted several things in his garden and it looks terrible. Is there something he can add to get it going?

Recommendation - Jay would just start over. Supplement the soil with Hickman's organic compost 6-12 inches deep. Add gypsym too, water it really well and start from seed in the next few weeks.

**Julie talks about using drones to improve the care of plants in fields.

Segment 2 (running time 6:01)

Listen to this segment

Julie & Jennifer talk about a few articles for people looking to grow their own garden, indoors out outside.

  • Growing herbs and other great starter plants.
  • How certain plants aromas can help with your romantic life!
  • Cool Weather Gardens versus Summer Heat Gardens!

Segment 3 (running time 13:32)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Brad - He wants to start a raised-bed planter, but wants to know if it's too late in the season to start it now?

Recommendation - It's absolutely fine to start now. The raised planter uses supplemented soil anyway, but consider adding Mel's Mix on the top 2 inches or so. Rosie loves the Belgard Retaining Wall Blocks. Pick them up at Oldcastle Superlite!

*We discuss all the other aspects you could include.

*Julie shares a few of the educational endeavors she's part of. One is the Arizona Ag Mag!

  • Ryan - He planted tomatos around Christmas time and now the fruit is looking really small. Should he take them out and prep the soil for winter veggies or try to keep them going through the next few months.

Recommendation - Jay would take them out. It takes a lot of water to keep it going through the summer, plus cost for fertilizer, etc. And it will freeze over the winter too. A plant is very inexpensive and he could start them new next spring.

**The costs of food around the world and what percent of your income goes to your food compared to other countries residents.

Segment 4 (running time 6:17)

Listen to this segment

Find great recipes at the Fill Your Plate site and we even have Baby Kay's Recipe's Here.

Caller:

  • Josh - He has already taken out the plants from his raised planter. What should he use to supplement the soil?

Recommendation - He may need to add some soil to bring it to a good level and then add some fertilizer and gypsum and he should be good to go.

**Learn why nitrogen is important to our Arizona soils.

**If you're looking to get out with the kid's, stop at Apple Annies or Bonita Bean Company.

If you have questions for Jay, stop in at Harper's Nursery & Landscaping CompanyLandscaping Company. And, thanks to Julie for stopping by. Don't forget to shop locally for food and find great recipes here.

Segment 1 (running time 12:14)

Listen to this segment

We talk about our new site....you're here, so I guess you've seen it!

  • New Features
  • More for the Do it Yourselfer's than ever!

Caller:

  • Tracy - His tub is starting to rust.....can he get this repaired? If not, what should he put back in it's place if he does have to replace it.

Recommendation - If it's just those two spots, he can remove the fittings and sand away the rust and have it repainted. This is a temporary fix, but a much better option than completely removing the tub prematurely.

*Rosie describes the miserable job of removing a cast iron tub....It doesn't sound fun or easy.

Segment 2 (running time 6:32)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Brian - He has misquitos getting in his home and he doesn't know how they're doing it...any ideas how they could be making it in the house.

Recommendation - Rosie investigates....he needs to eliminate standing water around the property. Jennifer used Johnson's baby creamy oil on the kids, plus a few other options. Check out Fight the Bite.

**Romey checks in from Bison Ranch and the Sanderson Ford Arizona Crawfish Festival. We hope you could made it!

Segment 3 (running time 13:24)

  • Rosie covers a common question about septic tanks.

Caller:

  • Hank - He wants to reseal and polish the granite around his home in bathrooms and the kitchen. Who would we suggest doing it?

Recommendation - Call Phoenix Carpert Repair & Cleaning

(Rosie talks about repairing carpet instead of replacing it. Save $$$)

  • More info on our top Do It Yourselfer Questions...this one on ceiling fans. Fans should switch directions, depending on seasons. There is a switch for doing this and Rosie walks listeners through the process.
  • Learn about Super Cooling Here

Segment 4 (running time 6:26)

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Jim - He used Rosie's Super Cooling methods and from one year to the next, he's saving about 40 percent on the bills. He's using more energy and staying cooler. It works!!!

**Rosie and Jim talk through what he's done and how he got started on this method of staying cooler for less money.

  • Brad from Integrity Air Conditioning joins us to share his opinion on "Super Cooling" and programable thermostats. Listen as the guys talk through why they like it or don't like the method. Listen to both sides of the story.
  • Another top D-I-Y'er question about converting a car port into an enclosed space and what about gas fireplace codes?

Segment 1 (running time 12:35)

Listen to this segment

Chris with Stampede Plumbing is here to talk about changes in regulations for new water heaters and to take any questions about plumbing at your house.

  • Rosie hits hime with an opinion question on his preffered plumbing pipe material. Pex versus Copper?
  • Why the changes in Water Heater regulations?  (Hopefully, it's better than the introduction of low-flow toilets.)
  • Increased size and higher costs. More efficient.

Caller:

  • Betty - Her water softner system needs new resin....the prices seem very high and wants to know if she should spend money on resin or a new system altogether?

Recommendation - $450.00 sounds like a fair price. For a professional opinion, she can call Water Treatment Technologies

  • More about the new regulations....
  • How Water Heater's Function and all the parts. What to know about each part and how to care for it.

Caller:

  • Mike - His water heater is making a very large noise a couple of times a day. It's only a 4 year old unit.

Recommendation - He should check the safety release valve to make sure it's safe, but this will take some investigation by a professional.

Segment 2 (running time 6:14)

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Bob - He installed a gas water heater this year and came across a caution about hydrogen gas being dangerous if the unit is shut off for a few weeks.

Recommendation - Chris recommends running water through the system before restarting it. This is a very rair occurance and Chris hasn't seen this in the area.

(Leaving water sitting in water heaters and in pipes for several weeks or even months for snowbirds isn't good.  Drain pipes and just beware that the water has been sitting there.)

  •  Solving odor issues.

Segment 3 (running time 13:07)

Listen to this segment
  • How Chris got into Plumbing and why he loves his job.

Caller:

  • Carmine -  What is the difference between pex piping and copper piping? He's from California and is just curious about the regulations and preferences.

Recommendation - If it's a newer home, the odds are good that it's pex not copper. It wasn't up to code in the past, but now it's good to go. Chris loves pex.

(Good and bad of each and how it's changed over time.)

Caller:

  • Jim - He wants to know the proper procedure for draining a water heater and is it okay to drain that water onto plants, etc.?

Recommendation - People drain water heaters to get rid of the sediment that builds up. Chris walks through the process and the water is fine to drain anywhere. (You shower in this water, after all)

Segment 4 (running time 6:44)

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Tom - He is getting about a quarter cup of sediment out of his water heater each month....does that sound right?

Recommendation - That sounds about right and he could just drain it longer to try and get rid of more of it. Not many people drain water heaters once a month, so his preventative maintenance is way ahead of the game. Great work, Tom!

  • More maintenance tips from Chris & Rosie.

Thanks to Chris for stopping by! If you have plumbing problems in Phoenix, call Stampede Plumbing!
