Tip of the Week: August 1st.....It's a day that you can go from planting 4 or 5 veggies in the garden to 14 or 15. You're garden soil needs to be prepped and Jay lists several plants you can get in the ground.

• Roger - He planted several things in his garden and it looks terrible. Is there something he can add to get it going?

Recommendation - Jay would just start over. Supplement the soil with Hickman's organic compost 6-12 inches deep. Add gypsym too, water it really well and start from seed in the next few weeks.

• Brad - He wants to start a raised-bed planter, but wants to know if it's too late in the season to start it now?

Recommendation - It's absolutely fine to start now. The raised planter uses supplemented soil anyway, but consider adding Mel's Mix on the top 2 inches or so. Rosie loves the Belgard Retaining Wall Blocks. Pick them up at Oldcastle Superlite!

• Ryan - He planted tomatos around Christmas time and now the fruit is looking really small. Should he take them out and prep the soil for winter veggies or try to keep them going through the next few months. 

Recommendation - Jay would take them out. It takes a lot of water to keep it going through the summer, plus cost for fertilizer, etc. And it will freeze over the winter too. A plant is very inexpensive and he could start them new next spring.

• Josh - He has already taken out the plants from his raised planter. What should he use to supplement the soil?

Recommendation - He may need to add some soil to bring it to a good level and then add some fertilizer and gypsum and he should be good to go.

• Tracy - His tub is starting to rust.....can he get this repaired? If not, what should he put back in it's place if he does have to replace it.

Recommendation - If it's just those two spots, he can remove the fittings and sand away the rust and have it repainted. This is a temporary fix, but a much better option than completely removing the tub prematurely. 

*Rosie describes the miserable job of removing a cast iron tub....It doesn't sound fun or easy.

Callers:

• Brian - He has misquitos getting in his home and he doesn't know how they're doing it...any ideas how they could be making it in the house.

Recommendation - Rosie investigates....he needs to eliminate standing water around the property. Jennifer used Johnson's baby creamy oil on the kids, plus a few other options. Check out Fight the Bite.

• Betty - Her water softner system needs new resin....the prices seem very high and wants to know if she should spend money on resin or a new system altogether?

Recommendation - $450.00 sounds like a fair price. For a professional opinion, she can call Water Treatment Technologies

• Mike - His water heater is making a very large noise a couple of times a day. It's only a 4 year old unit.

Recommendation - He should check the safety release valve to make sure it's safe, but this will take some investigation by a professional.

Caller:

• Bob - He installed a gas water heater this year and came across a caution about hydrogen gas being dangerous if the unit is shut off for a few weeks.

Recommendation - Chris recommends running water through the system before restarting it. This is a very rair occurance and Chris hasn't seen this in the area.

(Leaving water sitting in water heaters and in pipes for several weeks or even months for snowbirds isn't good.  Drain pipes and just beware that the water has been sitting there.)

• How Chris got into Plumbing and why he loves his job.

Caller:

• Carmine -  What is the difference between pex piping and copper piping? He's from California and is just curious about the regulations and preferences.

Recommendation - If it's a newer home, the odds are good that it's pex not copper. It wasn't up to code in the past, but now it's good to go. Chris loves pex.

(Good and bad of each and how it's changed over time.)

Caller:

• Jim - He wants to know the proper procedure for draining a water heater and is it okay to drain that water onto plants, etc.?

Recommendation - People drain water heaters to get rid of the sediment that builds up. Chris walks through the process and the water is fine to drain anywhere. (You shower in this water, after all)

Caller:

• Tom - He is getting about a quarter cup of sediment out of his water heater each month....does that sound right?

Recommendation - That sounds about right and he could just drain it longer to try and get rid of more of it. Not many people drain water heaters once a month, so his preventative maintenance is way ahead of the game. Great work, Tom!
