Tip of the Week: For much of Arizona, frost should be out of the picture now.  Let's hope it's true. (Unless you own a nursery)  With spring weeds are exploding & the bugs are getting busy in the garden.

• They want to get rid of a saguaro cactus in her yard. Is there someone that can remove it for transplant instead of just cutting it down?

Recommendation - She can call a specialty company if it's accessable. She shouldn't count on making any money.

• What can I do to kill everything in his grass, except the grass?

Recommendation - There are a variety of herbicides that he can use that will do it. Jay explains the tricks to success.  Pulling them is an option, but he can take down a few examples to a nursery for recommendations.

• Hope - She has an orange tree where the fruit is discolored and doesn't taste very good. The tree next to it is fine, but this is the first time it's happened. What could be happening?

Recommendation - It's tough to diagnose and Jay would need to see one to determine what's going on. Remember, the color can be due to temps not whether or not it's ripe.

• Walter - Why did the apple tree next door keep all it's leaves and he also has a question about all the alfalfa being grown in LaPaz County....

Recommendation - A lot of apple varietes don't go completely dormant here. It's fairly common here with our warmer temps. The Ag Deparment of AZ will know more about the alfalfa in Arizona, but Julie gives some of her thoughts on the issue.

• Betty - She can't get rid of clover in her yard. She replaced her lawn and now it's creeping back.

Recommendation - Jay likes fertilome weed out, a broad leaf herbicide, but she should be applying pre-emergent herbicide in the fall to prevent it.

• Josh - His backyard has been neglected for a lot of years. What kind of tips would we recommend to get started?

Recommendation - For a grass lawn, he'll need irrigation 1st. Then talk to experts on how to get a lawn started. Stop at Sprinkler World.

Callers:

• Tony - The threshold under his front door is leaking and he can't adjust the threshold. How hard is it to replace a front door?

Recommendation - After investigating, Rosie thinks adding a door sweep could solve the problem. The front door can be replaced & we talk through the steps to get it done.

• Jean - She just wanted to thank us after attending the Dolly Steamboat Cruise this past weekend. She also wanted to know where this famous place is that serves homeade pie?

Recommendation - The most famous pie place we know of is at Rock Springs Cafe. Yum!

Caller:

• Ted - He recently relocated and leased a townhome he just purchased. The complex has leaks and one of the commonly shared walls has water damage. The H.O.A. will fix the roof, but no interior damage.

Recommendation - This is a fairly common agreement and not a whole lot he can do to get them to fix the interior. This is usually how it works. 

*We found a pie place about possible "Pie Places" for our listener from the last segment. Try the Crosswinds Cafe in Payson, Miss Fitz 260 Cafe or Beeline Cafe.

March's To-Do List for Homeowners:

• Take a look at your pool and the filter system. 
• Take a look at your utility bill and get ready for higher bills. We discuss the different power plans from the utility companies.
• Check your A-C system. Get an inspection, cleaned and filters replaced.

 Caller:

 Kim - Her side gate is settling and she can't get it open. Who can fix it and do we know of anyone that can fix it?

Recommendation - She could have Handman Connection take a look. It should not be expanding and contracting as she's describing.

Caller:

• Lynn - She is getting a nasty smell coming through the A-C vent system. She's had it cleaned as well as a bathroom vent replaced by.  It's all sealed, but now the odor is back.

Recommendation - We investigate & Rosie describes what needs to be done to find a leak because something is getting into the vent somehow. She could call Indoor Air Quality Specialists.

• I work from home and my wife is home all day....are we out of luck on this "Time of Day" plans with APS or SRP?

Recommendation - Probably not, but we'd need more information. Talk with your AC expert.

• March tasks....putting the sunscreens back up before the summer heat.
• It's time for Spring Cleaning...Reduce, Reuse or Recycle.
• Clean up rooms with water heaters. Get rid of dangerous cleaners or chemicals.

Callers:

• Darryl - He needs to paint his home and wants to know if he should seal up his stem wall while he's doing it?

Recommendation - Yes! The deeper you dig, the better it will be. Whatever moisture thats in the soil will get pulled into the unprotected area. Rosie walks through using thoroseal to seal the wall and how to apply it. Stop at a Marvel location and they can help.

• Charlie - He wants to know a rough cost estimate per square foot on a granny pod or something similar that is not prebuilt?

Recommendation - He'll need to know if power needs to be upgraded. Plumbing is a factor and generally speaking, matching your existing home goes from $100 per square foot to $200 per square foot.

• Rick - He wants to put up a patio roof and is wondering if there is a restriction on how far out the roof can go to the property line?

Recommendation - Every home has a list of setbacks and he can find out by contacting Pima County for the figures. We'd be surprised if there is any issues with what he wants to do.

• Alex - He's helping a friend paint a bathroom and wants to make sure he can use killz paint through the sprayer? 2nd Question....Is it worth it to use the upgraded wax rings?

Recommendation - Yes, the paint should be fine. And the traditional wax rings work fine and it seems like an unneccessary upgrade. Talk to a plumbing wholesale supplier about them for more advice.
