Scammers, also known as "travelers," are pesky door-knocking salespeople who use high-pressure tactics to get homeowners to sign up for construction repairs or installations that aren't actually needed. Their go-to "jobs" are installing a new roof, repairing a damaged air conditioning unit, re-stuccoing and painting, or re-landscaping your yard, while offering low costs and possibly utilizing leftover materials. These salespeople tend to appear after large, destructive storms and during the monsoon season. Here is how to avoid door-to-door scammers and what actions to take after a storm...

Farmer Greg says making a big compost bin can be 'futile'.  But the simplest way to start is food scraps, newspaper or cardboard in a worm bed.  He explains you can start one under the sink or a small tote. 

Greg explains another way to build your own called a 'flow thru worm composting bin'.  Describes his outdoor worm bin.  It doesn't have to be expensive to build.

Farmer Greg explains 'hot composting'.  Getting the right percentage of greens and browns.  The greens are nitrogen, browns are carbon.  Consisting of woody mulch, leaves and dry grass clippings.  As more is added, microbes break it down releasing heat.

Director Jeff Fleetham of The Arizona Registrar Of Contractors discusses avoid scams especially after the recent monsoon storms that hit the area.

Avoid the tension to getting repairs done now.  After a weather event, labor and material shortages and not enough licensed contractors are a real factor.

Scamers target vulnerable customers.  Why exchanging cash for a project is a major RED FLAG!  

Why a licensed contractor is most important.  Understanding the agreement before you sign anything.

Jennifer's story of a suspicious two legged roof rat with a truck.  Logo was taped on the truck.  Plate was out of state.  Did a search on the company and a training video on how to hustle as 'knockers' on potential customers in Phoenix. 

No reason doing business with anyone who knocks on your door.  Contractors that are licensed, bonded and insured are the way to go.

Jeff explains what a licensed contractor does for vetting the people in business.  Contractors must be licensed in Arizona.  General rules are experience and pass an exam.

Discussion of how complaints are handled for licensed contractors and unlicensed entities.  The statistics on how many complaints actually get to a hearing.  

If a contractor license is revoked, it means there is some sort of an assessment against them.  Jeff explains some possible assessments.

Government doesn't tell you whether you can open a business or how to run it.  Jeff explains.

ROC does not prosecute unlicensed entities.  They can form a package case to send to a prosecutors.  They decide to move forward. 

Any person performing construction work that requires a license and are NOT licensed, they have no legal standing to sue in Arizona courts for money owed.
