We share events from across the state.....find them at the Arizona Game & Fish Department.

Segment 3 (running time 14:12)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Esther - She thinks we should focus our new hour on traveling through Arizona...she loves Rosie's descriptions of different parts across the state.

*we deviate into a conversation about food....shocker! Great Mexican in Globe...where to find a great steak.

  • Bruce - He wants to know why our electrical panels in Arizona are outside. Why do we do that?

Recommendation - Rosie's not sure....it's probably just due to the weather we have here.

  • Fred - He's building a new house and wonders what we think of using a home inspector after everything is done?

Recommendation - There is no reason not to do it and can be fairly inexpensive, so a 3rd party objective analysis couldn't hurt.

*We take more suggestions on a new topic, including water management.

  • Clark - He had a new roof laid down a few years ago and some of the shingles were curled. We reassured him that after the summer they would lie down, but they haven't.

Recommendation - He used Pinnacle Roofing and just needs to call Jason and they'll fix it right away. We have several great roofers in Phoenix like Lyons Roofing, Durafoam Roofing, George & Sons Roofing or Pinnacle Roofing.

Segment 4 (running time 6:06)

Listen to this segment

More opportunities to get outside....Recreation Area Cleanup, Prescott Walking Tours, etc.

Callers:

  • Gary - He's had an AC unit for 13 years and wants to know if he should be thinking about replacing it?

Recommendation - Call Desert Sun Heating & Cooling for an analysis to be sure.

*If you're ever in Casa Grande, stop in to BeDillon's Restaurant or the Big House Cafe.

  • Roger - He hates the landscape rock in his yard...what's the best way to get rid of it?

Recommendation - rent a tractor....anything mechanized to help. It's just not a fun job and a bobcat and trucks to haul it out are the easiest way.

Listen to this segment

Taking your Landscape & Gardening Questions with Jay from Harper's Nursery & Landscaping Company.

*Jennifer joins us from an American Society of Interior Designer Southern Arizona event in Tucson.  She gives us the run down of the events. Eren Design & Remodel is there too!

Tip of the Week:  Jay's had a lot of young couples coming in to the nursery with small designs and plans. Tying it into millennials....Jay asks what should you do first?.? Set out a game plan, so you don't put plants in a space you designed for a pool later, etc. Always put trees in FIRST!

Callers:

  • Dean - He has sprouts shooting out on a palo verde tree and wants advice on getting rid of it?

Recommendation - Getting rid of the tree first will eliminate the seed source, then think about pre-emergent to prevent the shoots from coming up.

Segment 2 (running time 6:54)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Julia - She bought a "bug light" and wants to know if she can use that in a fixture outside that has a globe. She also has a few cracks in a few of her walls too....should she be concerned.

Recommendation - The light should be okay and the crack sounds small enough and hasn't changed after several years, it should be fine.  To fix it, she can call New Frontier's Paint in Tuscon.

  • Brad -He's going to plant a pineapple palm tree and wants some help knowing where the water supply line is.....How can he verify where the supply line is?

Recommendation - Go to the Phoenix Building Department with his address and they'll be able to show you exactly where everything is.

Segment 3 (running time 12:20)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Margaret - She didn't get her roses pruned and they're overgrown. What can she do this time of year?

Recommendation - She can still prune them, but make it a way less severe cutback. She doesn't want to lose all the new growth.

  • Jack - On the 4th of July he put in a lawn and over-seeded with rye...The winter lawn is dead, but wants some tips on resurrecting the lawn.

Recommendation - Fix the busted water line and then let nature work its course. The Bermuda lawn will start coming back and then fertilize and start watering it. There's not a whole lot to do this time of the year.

*We discuss millennials and Jay shares what he's seeing from these new home buyers.

  • Jerry - He has 5 miniature rose bushes and he wants them to put them in a pot and wants tips.

Recommendation - Buy a nice pot, add potting soil with fertilome and Jay likes the time released fertilizer.  He should be able to get it done this weekend!

Segment 4 (running time 7:19)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • John - He wants some advice on pre-emergent for his hardscape....granular or liquid?

Recommendation - He already has a sprayer, so go with the liquid pre-emergent and just make sure either type is watered in.  Rosie uses this product from Bayer and has great luck.

If you have questions for Jay or need plants, visit Harper's Nursery & Landscaping!

Callers:

  • Tom - He has a brand new house and installed a new shower head and wants it to be extended further away from the wall, plus a 12 inch shower head.. Where in Tucson should he look?

Recommendation - In Tucson, visit Benjamin Supply

  • Bruce - His neighbor has a bird feeder and all the waste is being dumped on his sidewalk and driveway. What can he do to keep them out of his tree?

Recommendation - There's not much he can do. He'll just have to talk to his neighbor.

  • Chris - He has some information about the "Bug Bulbs" a caller had during the landscape hour.  There is a circuit in the eco bulbs and if it overheats, the circuit will burn out. The new CFL bulbs do best in a vented enclosure, sitting upright.

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Victor - He has an older model wall-mounted furnace and wants to know where he can go to replace it or if he should just replace it with something newer?

*Dan King joins us from Harmon Solar to talk about the new rules SRP put in place.  Listen to what it could mean for you!!

Recommendation - At 12 years old, it's getting to the end of it's life. Check the service records to see what has been replaced, then have Knight Air Conditioning & Heating or Integrity Air  Conditioning & Heating stop out and get their opinion.

  • Jane - She has 15 wood vega's that are 23 years old and they'd like to replace them.

Segment 1 (running time 12:05)

Listen to this segment

We answer Ron's question from the last segment. He needs this "How To Choose A Contractor" guide and Rosie gives a few extra tips.

Rosie Talks about some of the surprising facts about Millennials.  They're a huge group moving into the housing sector. 75 percent of all the home closing from the last 2 years are first time home buyer's.  Contrary to what we've been told, they want a home and a yard in the suburbs.

We Break Down the Different Age Groups:

  1. The Matures  (70+)
  2. The Boomers (51-69)
  3. Gen. X'ers     (38-50)
  4. Millennials     (20-37)

Caller:

  • Brian - He wants to re-plumb his home and is looking for a plumber to give an estimate.

Recommendation - We have 3 plumbers he can call; Babcock Plumbing, Thunderbird Plumbing or Stampede Plumbing

Segment 2 (running time 6:45)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Matthew - 28 years old and buying his first home and we ask him if if the statistics match with what he wanted.  He's moving from an apartment into a new home with his fiance and a dog. He shares how he came to buy the home he is about to move into.

*Since they plan on painting the inside and outside of the home, we're going to supply them with PPG Paints and send him to Oldcastle Superlite for Belgard Pavers in his backyard.

Segment 3 (running time 13:27)

Listen to this segment

Breaking down what Millennials are looking for in a home and yard:

  • Free-standing homes with a lot.
  • 2.5 Bathrooms.
  • Stand Alone Laundry Room.
  • Willing to pay a small amount more for "green products"
  • Don't want a gated community or to live on a golf course.

Caller:

  • Eric - He joins us to talk about some of the habits of millennials and urban planning based on the misconceptions we're talking about.

*We go in-depth with Eric and offer him a chance to product test a new security system we have been given.

*We discuss our "Secret Shopper" strategy to test our partners. If you'd like to take part in testing products email us....just click here.

  • Victoria - She needs to install 2 new AC units in her home and all the bids were within a few hundred dollars of each other. She wants to know our input on which brand and product is best for her.

Recommendation coming in the next segment.......

Segment 4 (running time 6:22)

Listen to this segment

Continued from the last segment......First, Victoria should read this Consumer Guide for choosing an AC Contractor.

*Rosie does NOT think she has the right contractor's at the home. None of the bids downsized her AC unit size. They're way more efficient now and most should go down in size....they're cheaper to install, cheaper to buy and keep your home cooler, with cleaner air too!

Caller:

  • Sean - He wants to know if spray-on foam for a slump block home is cost effective?

Recommendation -  Yes!  This is very cost effective and not a retro-fit application. Call Dennis at Thermal Advantage and he'll take care of Sean.
