Segment 1 (running time 11:54)

Listen to this segment

Garden expert and owner of Harper's Nursery & Landscaping Company, Jay Harper is here to take your questions!

  • Fall weather is here and it's perfect for almost any project.
  • Jay runs through all the veggies you can be planting right now.
  • Winter colors are ready to go in too!
  • Plant shade trees now so they're ready for the spring next year.

Callers:

  • Sandy - Her lime tree used to be a big fruit producer and now she only has 2 limes. They're huge, but that's the only fruit. Why would that happen?

Recommendation - We'd bring in one of the limes to a nursery to get a better idea of what's going on. She does NOT need 2 trees to pollinate. Lime trees are self pollinator's.  We'd replace the tree since she has another one next to it doing really well.

  • David - He has a pigme date palm and he trimmed it back to far. It's a multi-trunk tree and one of them is doing well. What can he do to save it?

Recommendation - He could cut off the dead branches and try to save the one trunk that is still producing leaves. It will probably grow another branch, but it will take a long time. It's a judgement call on what he wants to do based on how it looks in his yard.  We also answer his question on over-seeding and Jay talks through steps he should take.

Segment 2 (running time 6:54)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • George - He wants advice on covering the trellis' in his backyard. What's fast growing, can handle the west facing sun and provide shade.

Recommendation - We like bougainvilla, tangerine beauty crossvine, cat claw and a few others that should work.

  • Steve - He wants to know if there is toxins in the block when buidling a raised planter?

Recommendation - We don't think he needs to be concerned about this at all. If he's seriously concerned he could line the interior with plastic (not on the bottom).

  • Catherine - She has one lemon tree and a tangerine tree. When will she know that the fruit is ready?

Recommendation - Lemons are easy. They color up to the right yellow & should be doing that right now. If the limes are turning yellow, it's past their prime.

Segment 3 (running time 13:07)

Listen to this segment
  • Building a container garden. The benefit and Jay's advice.
  • Tips on potting soil that will give you the best results.

Text From a Listener:

  • How do you know how large to make a raised planter?

Recommendation - Start small and think big! 4' x 4' is great for a start. You can expand those if you want more plants, etc.

*We discuss more about this and tips for a successful planting season. Linings, protection and soil advice.

Caller:

  • Frank - He has an ocotillo that blew over in the wind. He trimmed it and replanted it. Will it take or does he need to start over?

Recommendation - It might! It could take a while and he won't know until spring, but Jay would give it a try.

  • Tips on knowing if your plants are still living and ready to grow.
  • More advice on what you should be doing during these fall temps. Especially, before the frost hits.

Segment 4 (running time 6:42)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Jennifer - She has a desert willow where the top half broke off in a wind storm. The top is still growing and she wants to know if she should trim the bottom and get the top to grow?

Recommendation - The more you leave alone, the faster it will recover. Jay would leave it alone.

  • Kathy - Her pepper tree is over 20 years old and she has shoots popping up all around her yard. Is there anything she can do to permanently eliminate them?

Recommendation - Not really. This is just part of the issues with that tree.

*We talk about the sissou tree and the issues it can induce.

  • Peggy - She's been watering her Ash tree after we told her "to water and pray." She's done that and some of the leaves are coming back. Should she do anthing with it?

Recommendation - We'd leave it alone! She could determine if the branches are alive when it loses it's leaves or starts sprouting new growth in the spring.

*Watering tips for container gardens.

Recommendation - Cole breaks it down.

Segment 2 (running time 6:35)

Listen to this segment

Text From a Listener:

  • How new of a roof should a solar panel go on?

Recommendation - Generally, at 10-15 years old you should get it checked out. It's something they do on every site visit.

Segment 3 (running time 13:24)

Callers:

  • Frank - Do the solar upgrades come with the unit?

Recommendation - He's talking about the electrical panel upgrade to accomodate the new solar systems.  It might be required with an upgrade.

  • Richard - How do you size a unit properly?

Recommendation - How much roof space is available? What's the expected usage and what is the budget? That helps determine the size.

  • Charles - He wants to discuss using batteries to help save the power, rather than using the grid system.

Recommendation - Cole talks through why this is a good thing and why it can be an issue.

  • Rosie asks Cole "who's buying solar?"
  • Why buy now when the industry is progressing so quickly now?
  • How long should you expect your equipment to work for a homeowner?

Segment 4 (running time 6:22)

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Celeste - Who is really in charge of net metering going through?

Recommendation - We won't give voting recommendations, so Cole breaks down what it is and who determines all this. She'll have to do her own research.

  • If you sign up for the SRP plan, will he have to buy the panels? No. You can finance them.
  • Bill - Are panels a fire hazard? There are codes, but it shouldn't be a concern.
