Segment 1 (running time 12:17)

Listen to this segment

We're here with Steve Koepp from Advanced Home Systems talking about saving big $$$ on your utility bills! Learn how to decipher all those charges.

Letters From a Listener's:  Rosie reads a few testimonial from listener's who have tried it out and saved big $$$

  • We're not enemies with the utility companies, but if we can save, why not?
  • Listing off all the charges...do you know what they are for? Even Steve doesn't!
  • "Time of Use" Plans versus standard rates.
  • How to determine your kilowatt rate charges depending on who your provider is.
  • Using energy on versus off peak times if you're using a "Time of Use Plan"

Segment 2 (running time 6:23)

Listen to this segment
  • How Rosie moved his power consumption to "off Peak" times and started saving.
  • Discussing "Peak Demand."  The arguments against it and why we're for it.

Caller:

  • Ryan - He just started "Super Cooling" and loves it. He has old single pane windows and was shocked at his savings. He's on a Noon-7 plan, so his AC kicks on at 7:02 and then the dishwasher and dryer start up too. Should he spread out all those appliances being turned on?

Recommendation - It's no problem! Go for it as long as it's after 7PM.

Segment 3 (running time 13:27)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Mel - He has solar and is on his noon to 7 plan and he produces more electricity than he uses, so he's only using off-peak time charges and his delivery charge is more than his useage. Is that normal?

Recommendation - That could be accurate. The delivery charges are for the power lines, etc. We need to investigate further. We'll need more information to be totally accurate.

*We discuss the marriage between the solar industry, their recent changes and how you can save money.

  • Greg - He describes his utility bill. How will he determine if "Super Cooling" is a viable option for him?

Recommendation - Steve walks through his useage and it might be in the correct rate plan because of his current use.

  • Gary - He's had an energy management system from Advanced Home Systems and he loves it!! He bought it several years ago and swears he's not a relative. Does he need periodic maintenance on it?

Recommendation - They recommend doing it every 5 years. It doesn't effect the warranties and some haven't had maintenance in 30 years! We also discuss a fun story about a Father saving for his son's college with his savings.

Segment 4 (running time 5:53)

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Charlie - Does his computer system work with 2 air conditioners on his home?

Recommendation - Yes! No problem and after discussing his bill, it sounds like he's doing really well keeping his bills low.

*We talk about who should NOT be using the Energy Management System or Super Cooling.

Thanks to Steve from Advanced Home Systems for joining us today!

  • Mother-In-Law Units, pricing and options we love after our show on the topic a few weeks ago.

Caller:

  • Matt - AC techs keep telling him to use a basic fiberglass filter, not the pleated paper filters. He's getting a lot of dust in his home and wants to know which one and why?

Recommendation - It's about a 50/50 split on preference.  Rosie talks about why.  Some techs think the paper pleated filters starve the system too much and that's why they like the fiberglass. To keep dust out, we think the paper filters work much better.

*Rosie talks about duct cleaning as part of Matt's question and why/when it's a good idea.

  • Previewing next weekends show and a new issue in water treatment.

Text From a Listener:

  • Dan for Tom - How do they control the pool from "super heating" the water in the summer?

Recommendation - With the type of  cover Tom makes, it actually blocks the suns rays unlike the traditional blue bubble covers.  Tom talks the listener how it works.
