Tip of the Week:  For Father's Day, consider these gifts from a Nursery. 

1.  Do some work for Dad! Mow the lawn, fix the sprinkler head, etc.
2. Plant a "Legacy Tree" in honor of Dad. If you don't have room, contact a park near your home and they'll find a spot for you.
3. Take a look at his tools....does he need shears sharpened? A broken handle replaced, etc. Paul's Ace Hardware can do this for you!
4. Pick up some new Thorn Armor Gloves by HexArmor Products
5. Rosie loves the Wheelzbarrow too!

Jennifer found some information on Desert Harvester's Website about making tortillas out of mesquite beans and made some for the crew. We all loved them!

*Listen for the proper way to harvest them and how she prepared them.

Callers:

• Judy - She has weeds coming through her hardscape....does she need to remove the rock or place the weed cloth on top and add more rocks?

Recommendation - She can use weed cloth, but applying pre-emergent is a better method. Apply it a few times a year and the weeds won't begin to grow in the first place.

*Rosie uses the opportunity to push his favorite method for getting rid of weeds, the Weed Dragon Torch Kit.   Grandma's Farms uses an industrial version of this method too!

Callers:

• Trish - An arm on one of her cactus is breaking off....Can she do something to save it?

Recommendation - If it's healed up, it should be fine, but there's nothing much you can do. She can remove the whole arm & if it oozing black liquid it's probably a good idea. There are cactus specialists too. Trish can contact Arizona Cactus Sales or Carefree Cactus Gardens for advice.

• Joe - He has 5 citrus trees and a large pine tree in his yard, but not very much grass and he's looking for a ground cover option to add. Any ideas for him?

Recommendation - He can just go with a rock hardscape, but adding ground cover Vinca minor, Ivy's, etc. 

*Concerned caller couldn't wait, but he's got a ficus tree that's losing it's leaves. Whitefly infestation is causing serious problems in certain areas of Phoenix.

Edible Baja Magazine has info on milling mesquite beans for using in recipes.

Callers:

• Ida - First, she sets the record straight on Rosie's pronunciation of Casa Grande....fun stuff!   She wants to know if it's too late to plant a few specific plants by seed.

Recommendation - Vinca or moss rose plants would be better to start from seed now that the heat is here.  She could go with the plant, instead of seed and have color today! (here space is 10' x 10')

• Shane - He has 2 ash trees and the leaves are curling up and has white residue on them too. Do we know what it is?

Recommendation - It sounds like an aphid bug and pretty common on ash trees.

• Gary - He built a custom home about 10 years ago and wants to remodel the master bathroom.  He has mold issues now and wants to replace the cultured marble that's there now.  The key is low-maintenance and he wants a recommendation on companies to use.. 

*We investigate more of his wants and needs and give him some pricing he can expect to see!

• Debra - One of the supports of her car port needs to be replaced....who should she call for this project?

Recommendation - This is a pretty easy repair and he and Stan share the steps taken to replace it. She can probably have the work done by Handyman Connection.

• Robert - His patio is only covered by a small shade screen. He isn't sure the new framing is strong enough to hold the roof structure.....

Recommendation - We'll have Robert send in the video of the structure and follow up with him and make sure it's safe to use....It doesn't sound like it's strong enough.

• Andrew - He finished putting down tile in his master bathroom. The grouting lines were the hardest part of the process. Did he wait too long and that's why it was so hard to clean out?

Recommendation - Stan has his guys scrape the excess "thin set" off before it fully sets. Cleaning as you go is the best way to do it and it sounds like he used too much thin set.  Set the tile one at a time and use a smaller notched trowel that leaves less thin set.

(The guys give advice for 1st time Tile Setters:  Start in the middle, squaring, etc.)
