Caller:

  • Mark - He just planted an orange tree and he was told to cut off the fruit the first year, so it won't deform the branches because it's so small...how should he go about it?

Recommendation - He shouldn't have to cut all them off, but if it produces fruit and some of the branches deform, cut a few pieces of fruit off to help at that time.

  • Laura - What's the mystery of growing a bougainvillaea?

Recommendation - Laura lives in Wilcox and it's a cooler temp there. Bougainvillea loves the sun and heat, so that might slow down the growth for her. Put it in a planter to avoid damage during the winter.

Segment 1 (running time 12:29)

Listen to this segment

We're In-Studio with John Trice, owner of Arrowhead Deck & Concrete to talk decorative concrete!

Learn about:

  • Cool surfaces for the pool.
  • Textures & Patterns help keep the surface cool enough to walk on.
  • Style options are growing and doesn't have to be the same as all your neighbors.
  • Salt water pools? John talks about the pros and cons.
  • Want to get rid of the gray concrete slab? John can help!
  • Make your patio look like slate without all the maintenance.

Segment 2 (running time 6:13)

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Bob - He's going to rip out his nasty carpet for a work room and wants to know what to do to make sure it's a clean surface with no maintenance?

Recommendation - Simply get that existing concrete clean, removing any glue, dirt, tack strips and then he can patch the imperfections before he seals it up. Epoxy polyurethane coating should be perfect for his situation.

(Bob's wife is a painter and she could seal a painting on the floor permanently)

*Stenciling, lanes for security, etc. Lots of ways to add colors, logos for "man-caves," etc. Add personality to your concrete floors.

Segment 3 (running time 12:16)

Listen to this segment

Caller:

  • Allison - Is there a big difference in cost between cool decking and a intricate decorative concrete?

Recommendation - There are 3 different tiers of pricing and splitting the spaces with different options help keep the costs down.

*The crew discusses warranties.

Letter from a Listener:

  • Doug - He's had several bids for sealing his garage with an epoxy coating and the price range is extreme. How does he know what he should do?

Recommendation - Listen as John shares all the different options from bottom to top. Cheap won't last and a big box store coatings won't be a long-term solutions. Prep work is key and John shares all that they do.

Caller:

  • Tim - He came across a product that says it seals concrete from water...what is the benefit of this? He doesn't trust the answers he was given, especially since we are in the desert?

Recommendation - John uses these products and it prevents the slab from stains and it's easier to clean and maintain.

Letter from a Listener:

  • Sara - Will the concrete be hotter in the summer or cooler in the winter if they remove their carpet?

Recommendation - It will retain some of the heat or cool temps from outside, but it shouldn't be any worse than a tile floor.

  • Mack - How long do I have to wait after pouring a slab do I have to wait before staining it?

Recommendation - It depends on the time of year......In the summer it's around 7 days. If its shady and during the winter months, it's around 30 days.  All the moisture MUST be out of the slab before sealing the concrete.

Segment 4 (running time 6:04)

Listen to this segment

We discuss how sealers prevent messes and make clean up easy!

Caller:

  • Joann - Part of her home is concrete....can she put a floating coat over the top of the rest of the home and math the existing floors that have lasted several years?

Recommendation - John resurfaces the entire floor because everyone uses a different sealer and even if it's the same company. It's virtually impossible to match an older coating, so an entirely new surface would be best.
