Around The House Hour: Can You Build A House To Survive A Wildfire Everyone was horrified at last year's fires in California, but then we read a newspaper account about a home in Malibu that survived one of the worst wildfires ever in that state. Arizona doesn't seem to have as many risks as California... but we certainly have wildfires. In light of the fact that the summer season of wildfires might not be far away, here is a list of materials and techniques that can be used during building to provide more fire protection for an Arizona home. |
Coolest Memorial Day Weekend below 100. The shortest Memorial Day Parade in Arizona?
Barbara Hatch, Founder and Program Director of Veterans Heritage Project. Dedicated to connecting students with Veterans to get their stories told.
Barbara talks about how the program started with students interested with the real stories behind the movie 'Saving Private Ryan' which led to Veterans of WWII and Korea ready to tell their stories about their experience in these wars.
How students of the project are participating in Memorial Day activities.
What students duties include. Interviewing and writing the stories of Veterans. And more students are needed.
Next year's focus is on Vietnam Veterans.
Barbara gives 2 examples where a student connected with a Veteran to tell their story. A WWII Veteran's salute to a fallen soldier and a Vietnam Veteran's story of loss.
Students learn life lessons from their connections. How to live, deal with adversity and how to serve no matter what career they choose.

Green building follows 3 things: social, environment and economics. Alex explains.
Sustainability: meeting the needs of today without compromising the ability for future generations to meet their needs. A mindset.
Sustainable products on the market that are not being used for residental. The reasons why explained.
Buyer's decisions/cost, consumer demand and trade skills.
Step one in building: the location and how to position the home for cooling and heating.
Step 2: Product selection. Sustainable because they are renewable. Example is wood.
Step 3: Building practices. Systems that work separatly but together for efficency.
Good first step in planning is a Home Energy Audit.
