Segment 1 (running time 11:47)

Listen to this segment

John Eisenhower with Integrity Tree Service joins us to take your questions about trees!

Phoenix and other parts of Arizona are dealing with the whitefly that's come here from Florida & can wipe out an entire yard of trees.  John shares what to look for and how to spot it.

  • Be especially careful if you have a ficus tree.
  • How to spot them on your trees.
  • If you spot a whitefly in you yard, call the Arizona Agricultural Extension Office at 602-827-8200.
  • Learn why Arizona can be susceptible to all the pest problems we're dicussing.

Segment 2 (running time 6:49)

Listen to this segment

We discuss the Pros and Cons of planting Native Trees versus Non-Native Trees.

  • Native trees are used to the water and heat....the pests too.
  • Texas Live Oak is one tree that can grow very well here.

Callers:

  • Kevin - He has citrus trees where the fruit is falling off the plant early. Is that okay?

Recommendation - There are so many reasons fruit drops (wind, heat, etc.) it would take a site visit to truly determine the cause.

  • Kevin - The tree roots are encroaching on his mothers homes foundation and his landscapers want to cut the root back so it won't damage the home. Will that kill the tree?

Recommendation - If it's just one root, he should be fine. Keven could install a "root barrier" that block roots from getting through it and damaging the home.

Segment 3 (running time 12:53)

Listen to this segment

More about Bonide Products you can find at Treeland Nurseries, Summer Winds Nursery or Christopher's Garden.

Callers:

  • Todd - His neighbor has ficus with whitefly and wants to know who can treat them?

Recommendation -  Call Ray at Scottsdale Weed Control at 480-941-9471.

**We share the story of the Ghost Gum Eucalyptus tree we're big fans of.

  • Matt - He has a Hong Kong Orchid with some light frost damage and is taking quite a while to come back to life. It also has a sticky film on the tree...should he be concerned?

Recommendation - It's hard to know, but sap is common when there are wound sites on the trunk. With a younger tree, it will struggle to recover until it's 4 or 5 years old. Think about agriculture cloth to protect the tree. Just install it correctly.

*We share some events put on by the Valley Permaculture Alliance.

  • Robert - He transplanted a citrus tree a few months ago and is struggling. Should he replace it or is there hope for the existing tree?

Recommendation - It's hard to know and he can protect the trunk for a few weeks and be careful to not over-water it. That is a common mistake people make.

Segment 4 (running time 6:28)

Listen to this segment

We talk about the proper pruning for this time of year.....None? Some? All? Listen and make sure you're caring for your trees properly.

Rules for Pruning a Tree:

  1. Always begin with a plan and stop when you reach your goal.
  2. NO "Recreation Pruning"
  3. Never Prune a plant you love when you're angry. HA!
  4. Start with the fastest growing and toughest plant.
  5. Don't clean up the clippings until you're done. This will remind you of how much you've removed.
  6. 25% should be pruned every year. No more!
  7. Stop periodically to assess your removal.
  8. Have someone stop you every half hour to ask if you're done.
  9. Bottom Line:  LESS IS MORE!

John gives tool recommendations for homeowner's.  He loves tools from Artistic Arborist or Vermeer Equipment.

If you have questions or need work on your trees, Call John at Integrity Tree Service!

Segment 1 (running time 11:56)

Listen to this segment

Cheryl Goar with the Arizona Nursery Association joins us to talk about Arbor Day!

*We share some history for the ANA and planting trees in Arizona.
*Listen for events happening around the state.
*For Arbor Day, they're planting the Red Push Pistache and we talk about the tree and where you can see it planted.

Caller:

  • Clark - His wife wants to install a fridge with an ice-maker. Is that a big deal to re-plumb their  home to make it possible?

Recommendation - It will need to have drainage and water added and can be done. Consider putting the Ice-maker outside if you can.  It cuts down on the noise they make and good for drainage too.

*Rosie talks about pear trees Misti from Warner's Nursery and Mick from Mick's Tree Service mentioned last week.

Segment 2 (running time 6:52)

Listen to this segment

We talk about more events the Arizona Nursery Association. Find them on the event calender here!

Caller:

  • Bill - His concrete patio has efflorescence and he can't get rid of it...what do we recommend?

Recommendation - Nathan with Belgard Pavers joins us to talk about sealing pavers and avoiding Bill's problem.  Bottom line for Bill...if moisture is getting any part of the paver's wet, it'll be a consistent problem. For cleaning products, Bill can visit Young Block in Tucson.

Segment 3 (running time 12:58)

Listen to this segment

Pick up Bonide Products to keep your plants insect free! Find their products at Treeland Nurseries in Mesa,  Viola's Flower Garden in Flagstaff and Mesquite Valley Grower's in Tucson.

Cheryl and Romey talk about planting a tree in Arizona and here's the video for Arbor Day they discuss.

Callers:

  • Leslie - She has two PVC pipes sitting on top of each other that are draining an excessive amount of water. She doesn't think it's the A-C line. What could it be?

Recommendation - It sounds like it has to be a condensation line coming from an A-C unit somewhere. It's confusing that it would be draining a lot of water with not a whole lot of humidity in the air. If the water is cool, that should be coming from your A-C.

  • Bob - His house is on a post-tension slab and wants to know if he can drill into the concrete to add a hook into the foundation?

Recommendation - Rosie never recommends drilling into a post-tension slab because of the damage a mistake can cause. Gluing something to the slab is much safer. Rosie loves an epoxy called "Hell or High Water"

Don't forget to sign up for the Sanderson Ford Arizona Staycation!!!

*Thanks to our sponsor Arizona Highways Magazine & Cerreta Candy Company for making the trip even sweeter!

  • Jay - He had a question on a Bonide Product Romey recommended and wants to know if he can use it on his palo verde trees?

Recommendation - Apply it now! Find it at Summer Winds Nursery.

Segment 4 (running time 6:52)

Listen to this segment

Callers:

  • Debra - She thought she heard us talking about a wild tree that you can eat the whole tree...bark and all?

Recommendation - We're not sure.....we'll have to research it and get back to her.

Rosie teases our 10 o'clock hour and pavers versus concrete patios.

Continuing with Phillips Question - He has some discoloration on his pavers and wants to know if there is a product to bring the color back and to seal it?

(NO PRESSURE WASHERS ON PAVERS!)

*Phillip also has an question on eliminating an odor at his church. We'll make sure he's hooked up with the services he needs because it's a church.

Caller:

  • Don - He's considering using a sealer to protect some of his pavers that get water on them. How long will it last and can it match the other parts of his yard?

Recommendation - Leveling the pavers is the first step, so water won't sit there. Repair it first! Sealers are not necessary and the "wet look" will only last a couple of years.

*Jennifer, the homeowner, shares her experiences and how she just used the products Don is asking about. She loves it and did all the work herself.

Segment 4 (running time 5:56)

Listen to this segment
