Why have my wood floors changed color? Text

All natural products go through subtle color changes as they age. Wood floors do, too, and often this “patina” process makes them even more beautiful than the day you had them installed. On a solid wood floor, no two boards will be identical. Variations in appearance are completely normal, even when the floor is brand-new. If you like your floors as they are, though, you can minimize the color changes.

Here’s how:

  1. Choose a species of wood that retains its color well, like oak or hickory. Cherry and bamboo floors, will change a bit more drastically.
  2. Don’t install wood in areas of your home that are constantly exposed to sunlight, which can cause wood floors to change color. If you have wood in sunny rooms, cover the brightest spots on the floor with rugs or furniture.
  3. Insist on a water-based finish, which will remain clear. Oil-based finishes tend to yellow over time. That natural yellowing eventually will make your wood floors appear a bit more amber.
