As the thermometer rises, you might wonder if it’s time to replace your old air conditioner or heat pump. Here are four warning signs that may mean you should call an air conditioning contractor soon:

  1. The blower motor on your AC runs all the time and no cool air comes out – and/or the motor seems to be getting noisier.
  2. Your power bills are rising higher than they’ve ever been before in the spring.
  3. You find rusty or oil spots on the cabinet of your outdoor compressor. That can mean that refrigerant is leaking out. Puddles of oily water outside the compressor can also signal problems.
  4. A circuit breaker on your electric panel pops when the AC starts. You can try to move it back to the “on” position, but only try this once. If it doesn’t work, call a repair service.

Many of these problems can be fixed, but if your system is more than 10 years old, it can cost more to buy new parts than to buy a new AC.

If you do decide to purchase a new system, check with your local utility company for any rebates or special offers that may be available. For example, right now, SRP has an offer where its customers can get up to $800 back on a new AC or heat pump. You can qualify for an SRP Cool Cash rebate if your contractor installs equipment that meets industry standards and manufacturer specifications for operating at peak efficiency.
