It is important to have gas fireplaces inspected to make sure that there are no obstructions in the flue pipe and the damper has a stop on it. When burning your natural gas or propane fireplace you want to make sure that all the gases are escaping up and out the chimney. Along with wood burning fireplaces it is very important to have a chimney cap on top of the flue pipe this will ensure that nothing has gotten into the pipe to cause the gas or smoke to back into your home. The damper stop is there for your protection, if your gas lines started to leak when you are not using your fireplace the fumes would be able to draft up and out though the damper and out the chimney not into your home. We come across many homes that the damper is sealed tightly shut. Cosmetically, a good general cleaning of the logs and flue of all the carbon build up will keep your unit smelling and looking nice. On some instances you might want to service the gas plate under the fire logs to clean out all the ports if they become clogged.
