How do I choose a pest-control professional? Text

Thanks to the National Pest Management Association for these tips:

  1. Deal only with a qualified and licensed pest-management company. Ask to see the license or other credentials of the pest professional who comes to solve your pest problem.
  2. Rely on the Rosie on the House certified contractor network when shopping for a pest-control firm. Rosie’s contractor-partners have been vetted by Rosie himself, and Rosie recommends them. For a list, visit www.rosieonthehouse.com and click on “Certified Partners.”
  3. Ask friends and neighbors to recommend pest control companies they have used.
  4. Shoo away the operator who shows up at your home uninvited and offers to give your house a free inspection for pests. He or she may try to scare you into authorizing immediate and costly treatments.
  5.  Get more than one estimate.
  6. Take your time making your decision. Choose someone who is knowledge as well as skillful in the application of pesticides and whose judgment you trust.
  7. Before signing a contract, understand the nature of the pest to be exterminated, the extent of the infestation, and the work necessary to solve the problem.
  8. Find out if the pest control company has liability insurance to cover any damages to your house or furnishings during treatment.
  9. If your professional offers a guarantee, learn what it covers, how long it lasts, what you must do to keep it in force and what kind of continuing control, prevention and management are necessary.
  10. Buy value, not price. Beware of bargains that sound too good to be true.
